Every time you go to the grocery store, you get a receipt that tells you what you bought and how much you paid for it. When you go to the gas pump and use your debit card to buy gasoline, the pump prints out a nice receipt that tells you how many gallons you pumped and what the price was per gallon. Go to the voting booth and you get nothing. How do you know that your vote was counted; and how do you know that the person you attempted to vote for actually got your vote?

You don't. But most people choose name recognition when they vote so it really doesn't matter.

Wife and I are watching the show "Scandal" right now and I have been thinking the same thing.... Usually they give you a generic receipt that says "I voted"

A farce, I think. If he were an option, I'd vote for the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man or that creepy Bib. US voting procedures would make a great Monty Python sketch.

The reason this is not done is because anyone can pick up your voting receipt and your private vote is suddenly not private. There is a modification of this which is implemented in some areas. In electronic voting booths a paper receipt is printed out under a glass cover, showing who you voted for. You are not allowed to take this receipt. This paper receipt is used if there is a recount.

They'd have to reach into my pocket to get the receipt. Secondly, I don't care if anyone knows who I voted for.

Merkava, perhaps you need to study civics or American history to review the concept of a secret ballot. Because they went over all of this in school. Cause they did do this for about 50 years with corrupt results.

Google Gilded age, Tammany hall, Boss Tweed, etc.

Boss Hog from Dukes of Hazzard is a caricature of this age, as well as any other political "Fat Cat" characters.

Elections were rigged because the fat cats would persuade people through money to vote a certain way.

While you may think, oh I can't be bribed, it is more sinister using intimidation or financial pressure: Vote for Candidate X otherwise you lose your job, or vote for X otherwise you lose your apartment etc.
Turn in your "receipt" to prove it.

Having a "receipt" or rolls would would ensure votes were counted yes, but counted only the way the Fat Cats wanted.

It is also why in a recount or review of physical ballots, any ballot that is marked with a distinguishing mark is thrown out as invalid. (e.g. you draw a dinosaur on your ballot).

Complete the saying, "Those who do not know history..."

I cannot imagine why this isn't mandated everywhere.

Have faith in the system.

You are choosing between two scum who both have been bought by people giving the most campaign contributions.

I don't know if you watched the first republican debate where Trump described how the system works.

You get a receipt that you voted. Election judges (my wife is one) verify that the votes are tabulated accurately.

If you believe the system is flawed and not accurate you are wasting air. There are many things more pressing to worry about.

As I said my wife has been a Judge for 15 years. I have 100% faith in the system. And I am a very sceptical person.

There are many, many people in government offices who would LOVE to know who you voted for, especially if you voted for their opponent.

My neighbor said back in the day when he lived in WV votes cost $2 and a pint of liquor. Elections were cheaper back then.
