Can anyone tell me who makes the Volvo Penta synthetic motor oil??

I live in Georgia...the boat only goes in a fresh water lake...when using the boat this time of year the water temperature is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit..the air temperature in the summer is generally mid-90's...debating on using straight 30 or 15W-50 multi-grade...Volvo Penta says you can use either. Your thoughts?

if you use the boat year round the 15w- 50[syn] would be the choice.

At one time I thought I read that a sub division of Amsoil blended the Volvo synthetic oils. I am not sure if it was 2 or 4 stroke stuff and it was made to the OEM specs and not a Amsoil product rebottled. I think the company was called Severus.

I've had several old boats, and ran straight wt 30 or 40 wt oil in them. Both were over 30 years old with original motors. As you know boats run at higher rpms then cars do, kinda like running uphill all the time.Fwc motors tend to run a little hotter the raw water motors do. But the oil takes a beating and you want it to remain close to the weight oil you started out with. Multi grade oils tend to thin out and I would believe cause unnecessary wear and oil consumption.

It just depends on use. I got a 3.0LX and it doesn't get used a whole lot. I mean, when I am using it, I'm not pegging it out at 4.6K RPM's pretending it's a 5.0 It is what it is. But, I did read on these boards years ago that the best of both worlds is a HDEO oil for boat engines. So, I've used Pennz. LL 15w30 on it since I've had it, 1996. Oil pressure stays around 40 all day long. It will drop down to about 15 or 20 after a long run, but still holding up very well. Along with the beefed up detergents, I can live with that. Your thermostat, if you have fresh water cooling, will probably be around 150 or so, so the engine is going to get pretty warm before that cold water hits the block, and it will probably won't be opened all the way.
