What gear oil do you recommend for a Volvo Penta SX Outdrive - Duo Prop? Mine is a 2001 and the manual recommends the following (which I can't find anywhere):

Mobilube 1 SHC Fully Synthetic SAE 75W-90
gear lubricant
All DP-S Models 81 oz. (2400ml)

Thyank you,

I saw that one-- but its Limited Slip (LS) and more passenger car quality-- I think the specs on the are higher and more industrial rated

Thyank you,
If this helps we have a 2008 VP SX drive and the manual calls for either VP gear lube OR Mobil Delvac 1 Synthetic Gear Oil which I use. (after writing this I am struggling to find where I saw this reference to Delvac 1. Im certain I read it but cant back it up right now.

Its important to know this is MOBIL DELVAC 1 Synthetic Gear Oil not the commonly available Mobile 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS
My VP owners manual specifically states either VP Gear Oil or the MOBIL DELVAC 1 Synthetic Gear Oil

IN fact due to your post I am glad to see the source I have used before has it in stock, I though they stopped carrying it and would have to go to the VP branded which is fine too I guess. The Mobile Delvac is hard to find in gallon sizes and glad to see it back in stock.

I try to be careful with gear lube in our 2008 SX-A Not a duo prop as with the clutch in these drives wrong lube can make trouble. I know nothing about the 2001. I think 2007 or 08 was the new version which I have. Anyway, I dont see how you can go wrong since VP offers the choice of their branded oil or the Mobile DELVAC

Anyway, this is the source I used before and I see they have it back.

Actually I found my old post but now I can find where I found the reference to this oil though I am sure I did because I dont go off script with gear oil in outdrives, like, never.

Thanks... I bought the delvac.... I used the volvo penta oil in the past... its probably the same... I called mobil and they said the delvac replaced the mobil 1 shc... which is why our manuals are different

Does one need to buy a QT also as the pumps seem to work only in QT containers?

To the best of my knowledge they do not sell quarts, even gallons are hard to find sometimes.
This is what I did, I thought it would be a pain in the neck at first but it wasn't bad at all, actually eliminated that need to wonder when if you would need to connect another quart.

I poured the oil from the gallon bottle into a suitable container and then simply held the pump in my hand keeping the pick up tube from the pump submerged in the oil. I think I used a 16 oz measuring cup.
When time to fill again, I stopped pumping, always in time so the pick up tube isnt exposed to air and poured more oil into the container to finish. You could also have someone help if uncomfortable or just find a big enough container.
It really was much more simple than I thought it would be and actually maybe easier if that helps at all.

How about buying a QT of Dollar Store oil. Dump the oil and use the container. Maybe even cut a cut a hole near the side top to pour in more gear oil. The threaded neck holds the pump but the hole in side top allows you to pour in more gear oil.

If that works for you I think that would work but dont you want to know if your getting near the bottom when pumping in the oil so not to pick up any air? Might be hard to do if you cant see through the bottle.
