Volvo Penta I/O Starter problem

I still cannot explain the battery cable connection to the starter. The diagram and shape of the boot seem to indicate that the battery cable is connected to a steel spacer that is screwed onto the starter solenoid.

Passing the full start load through a steel spacer does not make sense from an electrical perspective.

I do understand you enjoy working on it, but I never see any posts that you’ve been out on it
