Volvo Penta Engine noise

I hear a faint ticking or chirping sound. Not sure what it is.

I touched a mechanics stethoscope to raw water pump, PS pump, alternator and idler and tensioner. Did not hear ticking or chirping sound.

The tensioner seemed to have a rougher bearing sound that the idler. I would have thought they would both sound similar. Maybe replace tensioner.

I have a short video but cannot get it uploaded as it's too large or wrong format or both

First off nice video.. can actually hear sound. (not sarcasm)

sounds like some sort of belt or pulley noise to me. Good luck.

It’s not crank speed or cam speed. Definitely belt drive noise. I would suspect the belt because it is a very low frequency. Greasy or contaminated spot on the belt would be my guess.

Well, for me that noise used to bother me. I knew it wasn’t going to go away and you probably don’t hear it when you pick it up off idle.

Though your circumstance might be different than mine, eventually after a year or so I traced it to the raw water pick up pump on the Volvo engine.
It was easy to do because I noticed when lifting the engine cover eventually little drops of water started shooting up in the air.

It’s a pretty simple fix, but I got lazy and while the boat was being worked on for something else I told them to put a whole new pump in instead of rebuild kit.
I can’t remember the exact details of everything, but it was nice to have the engine back to a quiet state for lack of better words and no little droplets of water kicking around the engine compartment.
If I remember correctly, that noise started before any small leak was noticeable.

Well I did probe the raw water pump and did not hear the noise with the mechanics stethoscope.

I did just pull the raw water pump, replaced the impeller and the seal and checked the bearing. The bearing felt and sounded fine.
