Volume leveling on newer TV shows

I've noticed in a lot of newer TV shows, in louder scenes or scenes with music, there's very inconsistent leveling with the volume where you can audibly hear it fluctuate, it's almost like tape dropout or clipping.

My girlfriend and I were watching a music themed show on Netflix and in almost every scene where a band plays or someone breaks out into a musical number you can hear the volume jumping up and down repeatedly and it's annoying.

Is it my TV or is the sound mixing on newer shows complete garbage? I can't be the only one who's noticed this...

Checked the settings and nothing out of the ordinary.

You are right. There is just a lot of bad audio coming out of all broadcast TV. The one that puzzles me is when the music is louder than the spoken voices. I guess no one really cares.

There was supposed to be some FCC rule about that.. But I think they got around it by boosting the mid-frequencies without going over the FCC rule for volume levels. I also think they're messing with the stereo/surround sound mix, but the mid-range frequencies I'm talking is about 1khz to maybe 5-6khz. I've noticed it too with newer production commercials. they think they're being "creative" by trying to catch your attention but in reality people get annoyed instead.

It has to do with downmixing surround sound audio to stereo. That's why a lot of dialogue gets lost when being played out of two speakers vs loud and clear through a center channel speaker. In some video sources/players/receivers there might be an option to force stereo only output and have volume leveling enabled to have audio levels even across the board.

It's a TCL android TV. Not sure the model. But there's nothing special in the audio settings that would cause what's going on.

Watch a lot of OTA tv and all the commercials are LOUD.
