Law firm Nieding + Barth said on Monday it would lodge a case with a regional court in Brunswick this week, seeking hundreds of millions of euros in damages on behalf of 66 institutional investors from the United States and Britain
Volkswagen's (VW) shares have lost almost a third of their value, or about 22 billion euros ($24 billion), since it admitted in September to misleading U.S. regulators about emissions with the help of on-board engine control software.

VW may make it out of this ok, but i wouldn't count on improvements in reliability after all this legal expenditure etc.

Not only that they make some of the most entertaining to drive easily affordable, and safest cars you can buy at any price. wemay has a hate on for VW but it won't matter to the company one bit.

I can't say that about the ones I have encountered.....

In the past decade or so MOST VW models are almost as reliable or more reliable when compared to typical Japanese, and Korean brands.

I agree they are fun to drive and can be had at a great price, but they are not "one of the most reliable vehicles available". They have certainly improved in the reliability department, but they are not on top for sure.

I guess that depends on who you talk to . They are number one in sales in the world. I wish my GM's were as reliable as my VW has been.

Lol. HATE? I've owned five. I definitely loved the driving dynamics and conservative good looks but not one of the five was very reliable. I still have a fondness for Make but a spade is a spade. Maybe things have chaned but i was burned too many times. Last one i owned was a 2003 GTi VR6.

What i do hate is that the leaders have taken this proud brand and cheapened its reputation with this unnecessary nonsense.

Me either.

A decade or more in the automotive industry is like a century in many ways. There's no way you can compare a VW built in 2003, to one built in the past five or so years. In any case I have two of the older ones a 1984 Rabbit GTI and 1996 Golf GL and both have been much more reliable, trouble free, and cheaper to service than any Honda or Toyota I've owned.

This is true and of the five i owned, one actually WAS decently reliable... a 1997 white (faux) GTi 2.0L cross-flow 8V. I would still buy a VW equipped with this, granted, ancient motor. I cannot agree that the newer models are now as reliable as Honda, Toyota or any other Asian brand for that matter. More relible than in the past? Maybe, but not there. More fun? Yes.

My Dad's early 70's Beetle was both.

I always found that even though the number of MKIV Jettas to B5/B5.5 Passats is 4:3, if I looked in a repair ship it would look like the ratio was 10:1.

I know a few people with VWs and they haven't had any issues with them. I had a 2013 GTI and it was good, I'd buy another one.

My VW was pretty good, despite being a 2004. That said, they did some odd stuff--how does a flywheel wear out? Not the clutch, the flywheel.

I lucked out and had few electrical problems. I did have an "intake flap" (think throttle plate and ignore the fact that I had a diesel--was strictly for choking the engine during high EGR conditions--so an emissions device) which died twice. The replacement died barely after 1 year, so clearly the replacement was bad. Regardless: it was $500. Each time. Just for the part. [Albeit a 5 minute repair.]

Was a solid car, held up ok rust wise I thought. Rusted from the top down, unlike so many other vehicles I've seen. Sometimes I regret selling it. Not sure I want to jump into another one: diesel has jumped the shark, and their gas motors aren't that efficient. I'd contemplate an old school 2.slow with a 5 speed manual, maybe, as it'd be easier to repair when the miles racked up.

What kind of logic are you using here? You are discounting something built in last ten years and then touting something which was bought 20/30 years ago?

No I'm bringing up the fact that things like reliability can change dramatically depending on the time the vehicles were built, back in the mid-late 90s VW reliability was really pretty good, as good or better than competitive products, then things got worse, and in the past decade that has changed again.
