They give all the Tbn figures for all their oils. [/quote

I shot Mobil 1 an e-mail asking for the TBN of the 10W30 High Mileage and got a prompt response saying that info is proprietary and not released to the public. Since when s the TBN of an oil top-secret info?

I am running this in the yaris - its been a bit too thick for my commute this fall, so I thinned it with a cup of 5w-20 Syntec I had lying around. Car runs better than ever.

I have a 5 quart container of Mobil 1 HM 5W30. I am going to save it for next summer. I figure it is somewhat thicker than regular 5W30.

Higher viscosity, but otherwise I'm thinking EP looks better. Anyone else?

I was just wondering if anyone knew the TBN for these 3 oils?

I've been using the 5w30HM for a few oci's in my "02 stang and I've been happy with it. I was using the EP stuff but I have some valve seals leaking so it burns a little oil. I switched and oil consumption has gone down. Another reason was that the engine has 103k on it and I drive it like I stole it quite a bit, so I wanted a little thinker oil.

I don't think you can base the "better" M1 from our oil tests alone. I think the SS package in the EP is not the exact same as in the other 2. M1 own website says the EP "contains 50% more SS than regular M1 with SS".

So that must say something right there. I know we can all bicker back and forth on which is best, and we all know there is no best, but I think there is more to the EP than just what is shown.

The HM M1 looks great, but is it recommended for use for "low mileage" cars? Yeah you could use it, but "should" you? I know you could use it with no problems, but there must be a reason why its sold for cars with high mileage.

I will email M1 and see. I use EP in my Lancer Evolution and was told by M1 that it would be the best choice for my application. Now are they saying that so I spend more money? I get EP for $28 for 5qts vs. $24 for the HM or SS.

Its a toss up. My last UOA with EP came back very promising from Blackstone. So I will keep using it, but the higher ZDDP in the HM is of interest to me.

It is all about marketing when it comes to selling a particular oil. I have the 5w30 HM in my sons car and also in an 04 Impala SS with 8K miles. Both cars are running very smooth and the gas mileage has stayed the same or has went up about 1 miles per gallon on the highway. It may be a slightly heavier 30 weight oil but it has not effected the engine fuel mileage wise and like I said, the engines are running very smooth.

I don't believe its just marketing when M1 states that there is 50% more supersyn in the EP? I mean, no one really knows what SS is exactly, but its M1's main additive package so it must mean something to them.

Marketing yes, but I believe their is more to the EP than what our VOA's and UOA's show.

Now if someone can prove that the HM or Regular M1 has more PAO's than the EP, THEN i would bite on trying it out.

I just feel, no one will ever truly know unless your a chemist and did your own breakdown. The HM is $4 cheaper, but IF and I say IF the EP has more PAO than the HM then the added $4 per 5qt's to me would be worth it.

Common sense is telling me that their is more PAO basestocks in the EP.

I also thought that with the Penzoil Ultra but then Penzoil stated that it was mainly Group 3 based and that is their most expspensive oil they sell (over the counter).

So maybe M1 is the same? But thats the thing, No one really knows.

I really do not think there is much difference in the oils if you only plan on using them for 5K oci's like I do. I first tried the HM oil because of some weeping in my son's valve covers and it stopped that. I also like ther higher amounts of zinc and moly which I prefer in my classic cars.

If you are going longer on the OCI's then the EP may be better for you. Otherwise, all the Mobils oils are good oils.

Since I am programmed in my mind to change every 5K then I prefer Mobil 1 HM oils in most of my cars. Higher zinc/moly and they susposedly clean better.

I run M1 5w-30 HM in winter and 10w-30 HM in summer in my subie. Its got 109,000 miles on it now, runs smooth and quiet. All of my mileage is highway, so I change it out at 7000 miles plus or minus a couple hundred miles. I'm very happy with the oil.

I think advertizing one product to contain 50% more SS is a very telling statement concerning the cheapening of their regular M1 product. It's not that the SS has been added more PAO; it's that the regular M1(which used to proudly advertize it's PAO content)has had it removed for lower priced base stocks. The SS Extended Performance line is now what the regular M1 used to be. So when you compare the EP line with other oils known to be long drain oils it is no more and no less than they are and it's priced accordingly with them. I don't use the M1 line but if I did I would definitely go for the EP oils for a few more bucks.
Some touted the HM 10W30 oil as PAO because of it's low pour point until M1 admitted the data was an error.

Will be running the older vintage (purchased around 2009) M1 HM 10W-30 in my Mystique this winter, just wanted to check out the older spec's before the pour point was reduced and they went to a blend of calcium/magnesium for detergents...
