Hey, there's no place for MC VOA's, just UOA's!!

Oh, well, don't know how many are using Castrol "Actevo" 10-40 JASO/MA rated MC specific oil or not, so I figured I'd post it here. This is from a batch I got a few years ago - cost about $8.00/liter.

RON: This oil has a pretty standard additive package, so it will work well for you in that respect. The viscosity read at the top end of a 10W/40, though it still qualifies as a 40W oil. Where it's starting out isn't necessarily bad--just something to look out for if you decide to use this oil. We might tell you that the
viscosity increased, when really it starts out high. The TBN was nice and high at 8.8. No moisture, insolubles, or excessive metals were present

I'm presently running this in my DL1000 V-Strom and my niece's Honda Nighthawk. Those ZDDP numbers look a mite low. Maybe I should look at Rotella "T" 5-40?

The 'Strom forum guys seem to love RTS.

I've seen that oil sold over on the Wingstuff.com website. I wondered about it. But this VOA is, as you say, pretty standard. Nothing jumps out. If ZDDP is the concern, then Rotella beats it, both 5W-40 synthetic (still CI-4+) and the 15w40 Triple Protection (CJ-4/SM).

Don't know if you've seen some of the chatter on this site and over at the Rotella site ... the folks at Shell ran the JASO-MA friction test and it met the spec. That's something short of being "certified JASO-MA," but it's a whole lot more than some of the horror stories some preach about Rotella.

Thanks for submitting this ... it satisfied my curiosity about that oil.

A buddy runs it in his suzuki gsxr 600, always has, with the fram motorcycle filters. Never had a problem.

Although he did blow his motor but think it was from the constant speeds above 150mph that played a factor into it, not the oil

I has looked at it before as well. But then found out about rotella and the other ones so never bought or tried it.

i have not tested that version.

i did test the Castrol GPS 20w50.

raced for 2.5 hours during the Sidewinder Enduro and a susvis of 82.8
bzzzzzzzzzzz
thanks for playing the MixMaster of DOOM, but sorry you are not in grade. here is a nice parting gift -> recycle barrel at autozone.

I'm like [censored] no wear, but this is a fresh oil sample I take it.

Castrol genrally doesnt put alot of additives in many of the racing type oils, I've seen them state such info.

Just looking at the info , it would be about the same as rotella 5w40

which ever one shifts the best

He is a regular track day type guy but has been known to run it kind of hard on the street. His bike is modeled after Aaron Yates (#20) but he doesnt have the backing of factory Suzuki like yates, or Team Jordan as it is now.

They ran the Jaso test on the Rotella 5w 40 ?

Trust me.... 150mph isn't a problem an a 600cc sportbike.

i understand that, but dogging out your bike and always redlining it is probably not good either.

185mph is not a problem on a 900cc sportbike either
thumbsup2.gif

"185 mph" is not available on a STOCK 900cc sport bike with STOCK gearing...

Maybe it shows "185" on the speedo but not in the real world

Cheers!

Yeah the real top speed of your 900 is probably somewhere around 175mph. The real top speed of my bike is somewhere around 165mph...

and you both are a red stain on the pavement that gets picked up in a gunny sack if you run over a rock the size of a quarter.

i ran my cbr600 up the scale once on I10 between SA and Houston. this Stealth V4 and I got moving good. i finally got scared and back it down to 90.

I never said it was stock

FYI, a zx12r motor WILL fit into a zx9r frame!

just like a zx9r motor WILL fit into a zx7r or zx7rr frame

I'd guess the castrol has as good an additive package for the bike than Rotella.

If your just looking at the zinc, rotella might look better. But also look at the CA which can compete for surface with the zinc.

This is oversimplified (but so is zinc worship) Castrol has 1.68pp ca for every part zinc, Rotella has 2.28. Rotella is what it is, an extended drain soot control oil that has lots of Ca, and needs lots of zinc to compensate.

Stop!

Hold the presses.

Did I read that correctly?

You're not suggesting, good sir, that Rotella is anything less than perfect?

Interesting ... I had read that the recipe for oil additives is a tricky balancing act, and that a lot depends on the objective being sought. Is Calcium primarily a detergent/soot control additive? By increasing Zinc "to compensate" as you say, does that tend to reduce the effectiveness of the Ca that's present? Or can both be heaped in and get the best of both worlds?

But most important ... is my Goldwing going to explode into a million tiny shards of metal and plastic because I have Rotella in it?
