This is incorrect. The only thing Ford changed was the label and the way they market Motorcraft 5w20. The formula (developed by Conoco) hasn't changed at all: it's a Group III and Group II base oil blend. Taking a cue from Castrol, Ford has decided to call it a "synthetic blend" because of the Group III. Conoco's Hydroclear 5w20 is the exact same oil, but Conoco doesn't market it as a syn blend.

It's also possible that they realized that other countries such as Australia and Europe just don't accept 5w30 or 5w20, and don't stock it, so therefore they don't bother recommending those oils at all, and say to go with the thicker stuff.
