? about PP

Tried search but couldnt find it. Does Platinum run on the thin side like how Mobil 1 does? Like Mobil 1 5w30 close to 20 wt. I plan on running Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 next oil change.
 
Mobil 1 5W30 is 11.3cst at 100 C. That is not close to a 20 weight at all.The 5W20 is 8.8 cst. This is from Mobil's website. Pennzoil Platinum is 10.3cst at 100 C. The Mobil 1 is thin myth needs to be buried.
 
Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 is 8.46 @100C, cSt. And yes, that is the thinnest 5w20 I have seen. Castrol Syntec is the thickest 5w20 I have seen.
 
I dont have a problem with it being thin. I guess i heard wrong. Is the 10.3cst from Pennzoil Platinum 5w20? If it is 8.8cst to 10.3cst is a big difference between the 5w20s.
 
I like the fact the PP is the thinnest. Combine that with the wear numbers it has been producing and you got to think they are on to something.

It stems from the days when Mobil 1 5w30 was indeed a thin 30wt, at only 10.0 cst at 100c, while at that same time Amsoil 5w30 was 11.5 cst.
 
just in case anyone was curious, i just did a quick peruse of oils @100C

5w20 5w30
PP 8.46 10.3
Mobil1 8.8 11.3
RP 8.7 11.0
Amsoil 8.5 10.5
MC 8.8 11.1

That was one of the primary reasons I chose Mobil 1 5w30 for my supercharged Mercury Marauder; I wanted an oil that was close to the Ford-recommended 5W-20, but just a tad thicker as I felt (rightly or wrongly) that a 5w30 would be better in my specific application, and Mobil 1 fit the bill like a glove. I don't know whether it was the change from SL to SM (or the change from Group IV to Group III

), but Mobil 1's 100°C viscosity jumped from 10 to 11.3 cSt so I started mixing 40% 5W-20 and 60% 5w30 to get my desired 10 cSt. After learning that Mobil 1 "may" now be Group III, I said to heck with it and switched to PP.

Before anyone flames me, yes I know PP is Group III, but at least SOPUS isn't pretending PP is Group IV, stonewalling every request for information, and they aren't charging Group IV prices like XOM. I have nothing at all against Group III oils, I just don't like being lied to and overcharged.

Another alternative for those who want a 5w30 synthetic that is just barely a 30 weight is to go with Syntec 5w30, which is 9.7 cst at 100c.

They're after efficiency in the flow of oil through the engine, Tripps. With thinner oil, the lesser resistence to flow enables you to run a smaller oil pump, narrower oil passages and the parts that move through the oil (the crank and of course the oil pump mostly) have reduced energy losses vs. 30 and 40 weights. This all adds up to greater fuel economy of course, as well as more compact and efficient build of the block to begin with. In spite of a lot of old head philosophy (which states 30 and 40 protects better than 5W20), today's SM/GF4 rated 5w20 conventionals are as good as the synthetics for 3-5K OCI, and some folks run it longer than that even with great results.. Fortunately, the base oils that make up 5W20 are greatly improved, there are few, or no VIIs, and all this makes a better oil, again, for new cars built the ground up for them as well as many older cars whose manufacturers are backward-spec'ing 5W20.

There are other factors in play, but that's the gist of it.

One of those other factors (significant) are the engines that use thinner oil tend to run cooler.

As example, when I used 5W-20 last summer, my temperature gauge generally stayed about a third of the way up from full cold level. Now it's generally at mid-level point.
