I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 at the moment and love it. To run linux, you need time and knowledge. Most users would benefit from dual booting Windows and something like Ubuntu. Unfortunately, setting up a GRUB partition isn't easy for the average person because it takes time.
I think Windows is safe as long as you have a basic firewall, real time virus protection, and only visit well-known sites.
