VIRGIN K&N HP-1002 CUT OPEN

A few years back, I got a K&N oil filter from someone for my BMW. Unlike any other filter I used (OE, MANN, Mahle, Hengst) K&N was loose on the cage. As soon as I started the car, VANOS threw a code for an oil pressure issue.
Garbage!
 
A lot of race tracks don't allow oil filters with the welded nut like seen on the K&Ns.
Because K&N moved manufacturing to China where someone "optimized" the design creating many failures.

Rather than research the batch and OEM (the manufacturer who made the filter for K&N or whoever) tracks simply ban all with the spot welded sheet metal "nut".

As they should, before someone got hurt or killed over a crap oil filter.

The point is whoever makes oil filters for K&N is making them for another brand.

The sad thing is originally HiFlo Filtro made a quality filter with the nut, then made the filter as OEM for K&N, then K&N went to China. Due to K&N's negligence HiFlo's filters with nut got banned too.

I won't buy K&N-anything. HiFlo makes excellent oil filters.

Regardless, the safe track thing to do is ban any filter with the spot welded "nut". They don't know which filter may have a failuulre at that point, or how the filter was installed and the nut possibly over stressed. People's safety is more important. Use the hose clamp and safety wire trick.

Do you realize K&N's nut failures occurred 10 years ago?

Just how long has it been since anyone has seen a failure of an oil filter with welded sheet metal nut?

2-strokes drip spooge from the exhaust pipe, let's ban them from the track too!

If tracks don't allow them anymore, then they don't have track failure data of said filters with a spot welded "nut". The bottom line there was a reason they were banned, regardless of what they may be now.

Yes, if tracks have banned the nut then they don't have record of failures on the track. They never did have on-track failures, all were street "puddle under the bike in the garage after an oil change." And ancient history.
