How much was the Denso ?

I got it at Sparkplugs.com and it was $5.16 plus tax, shipping, etc.

I should've kept records, but I don't know the costs of most of the other filters.

Thanks for all of the kind comments, guys. Hopefully, this will be helpful for everyone... I just wanted to know if there really are differences between oil filters, and I guess you can say that there really ARE differences.

GREAT JOB DAVE! THANK YOU!

Interesting to see that the M1 EP's have less filter media than the regular M1 filters.

Moderator: Please sticky post this thread. I'm sure Dave's hard work will be referred to time & time again!

Dave..At one time the OE filter was significantly different than it's Motocraft counterpart.

The Motocraft filter did not meet the "requirements" that the engine division required. Primarily because of the silicon Anti-drain. Not to mention the performance of the media. ( and as far as I know the Motocraft still doesn't meet the performance spec of the genuine OE filter that comes with the engine)

Motocraft is a seperate division within Ford and have a different idea as to what they want their filter to do.

The filters are closer now than they used to be but they are not the same. The media performance is different.

Obviously both filters met the minimum performance specs as required but from there they are different in performance.

Isn't the OE Motorcraft filter made by Champion, vs the off-the-shelf Motorcraft filter being made by Purolator. I wonder if the bypass is dome ended in the Champion product.

The OE engine filter is painted grey..or was when I worked there. Look at any new Ford under the hood..

Champ supplies Motocraft filters. Where they end up I can't say. Could be dealers, could be retail locations. All i know is you'll see motocraft trailers as Champs distribution center a lot.

Purolator does make the majority of the Motocraft filter line that you see in retail locations. Don't know about dealers but i'm sure they are there as well.

I think I can help with this one. All OEM (talking assembly line) Ford filters are made by Champ. They used to be gray but are now white and have the special fluted crimp on the dome end that Ford specifies. I have cut lots of these apart and they ae a very solid filter. They have metal endcaps, threaded end coil spring bypass, silicone ADBV, and generous amounts of thick media, all packaged in a heavy duty can. It is a great filter made by Champ. I have NEVER seen one of these filters sold or installed in the aftermarket. Every Motorcraft branded filter I have cut open was indeed a purolator. BTW, all of the Champ OEM filters have absolutely no numbers on them. They are bare white filters, that sometimes have a black mark or orange dot on them.

Regarding the Champion filter being Ford's OEM choice.........I saw a picture of the upcoming Shelby Cobra engine and the filter had WIX painted on it-clear as day so it's not a case of misreading it. The filter was off-white or gray. Maybe WIX is going to be their high performance engine filter supplier?

99..

Correct me if i'm worng but the Shelby Cobra is built "off line" where they take a Mustang and modify it. A lot of tuners take mustangs and do their thing. In that case they can take the OE filter off and put whatever on.

Much like a lot of engine rebuilders use Fram..

They could have used the FL1A-HD (IIRC thicker can and higher burst pressure), but that probably costs an arm and a leg at as a dealership only part.

OE products, no matter what it is or who built/made it, are produced according to the OE specs. So what we have here is a filter Built by Champion to Ford OE specs. NOT a Champion spec'd filter purchased by Ford for OE use. BUT, some OE's do use supplier spec'd products.

As far as I know Wix does not make filters specifically for the Cobra engine oe use. We do make Racing filters and heavy duty filters that are available to anyone, Maybe that is how this one ended up in that picture.

If the aftermarket makes the filter to OE spec, then how does Purolator get away with the L30001 having a wrong end bypass valve? Surely Ford specs a threaded end bypass or Purolator would not make the Motorcrafts that way.

TP, I have a feeling that Pete is talking about stuff that comes on the vehicles from the factory, as opposed to stuff you buy at AutoZone, etc., or even the dealer. It appears to me that he's saying that anything installed at the Ford factory has to meet the exact manufacturer's specs, or it isn't used. Not all manufacturers are as picky as Ford, apparently.

I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.

Ford engine division is responsible for the "engine" specs.

Motocraft is a different division within Ford and can do what they want. ( as long as the minimum Ford filter perfomance testing specs are met).

STP hmm. It appears the bypass valve and ADBV are one molded rubber piece. Must not be a good design if M1 and K&N don't use it.

Could that be the reason another member had a problem with start-up noise with e-core?

M1 and K&N can't use the E-core design. Yet.

So they don't really have a choice in the matter.

Both use thicker metal shells and higher burst/collapse. The current E-core production line can not accomodate these differences in construction.

It has nothing to do with the ADBV differences. Those perform to the same specs as the Mobil 1 and K&N, so that isn't the problem.

What's up with the string wrapped around the filtering elements on the Purolator Premium Plus?

Thanks, Dave, for your efforts here!
