I will be putting up some vinyl siding but am not sure of the best brand to go with. The area has two big box stores -- Menard's and Lowe's. Menard's sells Cedar Creek siging and Lowe's sells Georgia Pacific. The specs are the same (8" x 150" x 0.04") but Lowe's is about 3 times the price per piece.

I am inclined to assume that you get what you pay for and go with PGP siding. But what if i"m overpaying and Cedar Creek is the same thing?

Any ideas?

Please tell me your not wanting Dutch lap. If your near a big city, you can probably find a better price on the GP siding from someone else. Pro's don't get there siding, drywall... from ripoff box stores.

Yeah, sometimes the big box stores are cheaper, sometimes not. With siding I noticed it was cheaper going to a supply house than Home Depot. Lowes is usually more than Home Depot. About 1/3 the price. Only annoying thing is that they're used to selling to contractors so even if you want a couple small pieces, they go and print out this invoice every time. But they didn't have a problem with a regular cash (credit card) sale. On the other hand, I noticed shingles were cheaper at Home Depot than the roofing supply houses.

I have found the supply houses will have a better selection of styles and colors of siding. Lowes usually has 1 or 2 colors on hand, they're lower quality. I have been rebuilding my back porch and the local supply house has no problems in selling me 1 10-foot stick of j-channel or a 2-square box of siding on a as-needed basis. Last box of siding was $210 for 2 square (actually covers 200 square feet) and they even loaded it into the back of my Ranger. I think that's 20 pieces of double D5 dutch lap, but they had D4 regular lap in 10 colors each..... siding? buy local. The siding I saw at Lowes was color-applied on the side you see, not solid through the thickness of the vinyl.

I just put Crain board on my house and love it. It has 1" of foam attached to the vinyl that makes the siding rigid and really made the inside quieter. Not really cheap but it looks great!
Thanks,
Andy

Also take a look at certainteed classis restoration avail at menards. It is super strong where you nail it to the boards. ( It has double vinyl in the hems ( i think thats what they call it))

When the winds are strong they snap at the place where they are nailed. The nail stays perfectly in the board

If you dont have many high winds then u dont have to worry about it

That brings memories from my prev house. Looks beautiful but needs paint especially on south side. If you dont like heights .then painting help is needed. But cannot beat the beautiful look. The house ended up with vinyl siding on top of red cedar. Double protection.

I want something more durable than cedar. It's not the Dutch style, I dislike it. Considered fiber cement but it's heavy and much more difficult to install by myself.

Looks like for siding you get what you pay for and the more expensive one is the way to go.

Usually the roofing nail have such sharp heads that they cut thru the vinyl and the vinyl flies off and nails stay put. Pic is of classic restoration by certainteed. Note the double layer of vinyl. I also screwed one row with washers having not so sharp edges.
Good luck. One man job is tough. Putting 12 footers is tricky. Much easier for one person to cut the 12 footer into 8 foot or less.

I hope you're young. That's a hard job to do esp. by yourself and around here labor is about what the materials cost. I paid 7K to have my house sided about 10 years ago. You also need metal brakes and specialty tools and know how to use them. I would pick another way to save money and farm this job out to a contractor.

Well if you are good with ladder that will help a lot.
Work with 6 feet to 8 feet sections or less ofcourse.
U can do the lower part of the house and have the upper part like gables be done by the pros. Can save a lot of money that way.

Good luck.
