The previous owner's son painted over the VIN and tire spec sticker/placard(s) on the door jamb though....dumb [censored]....was thinking about trying some paint thinner, or acetone, maybe "Goo gone" or "Goof Off" to it, to see if it would release the paint, but even then, it may "take off" the sticker/print itself....can't really tell if it is/was "engraved"/etched "plate" or an actual "sticker" of sorts.....but yea, sloppy blue paint all along the edge. Worst aspect of the car gotta say hehe.

But yea, the quick lube gets [censored], cause they always look in the door jamb to scan the VIN and it can't be scanned :P Gotta hand-key it in from the dashboard/windshield area....

BUT, now I can show them the scannable bar code in the trunk anyways....

Speaking of which.....Anyone know how I could "reproduce" the scannable barcode VIN number? Inside my trunk, it looks like just a sticker.......gotta be a way to "barcode" the vin....?

Chrysler always did them from the beginning.
I was working on an extremely rare 92 Iroc R/T Daytona at school (donated, sadly) when I was younger and they "removed" the VIN's so no one could dig up any info. Me knowing what I did I just opened the hatch and got the VIN.

deal with this all of the time with stolen Hondas and honda parts. The every panel identification began in the mid 90s and has progressed, this is an insurance industry program. DO NOT remove or paint over the stickers as this is how most stolen parts are recovered, try to remove one of the "stickers" on a new car, almost impossible. Once any "VIN anti theft label" or stamping is removed defaced the vehicle can be seized (in PA) until owner prooves ownership, usually the ATTF guys can raise a defaced, grounded, removed VIN plate or sticker. The owner at minimum will usually loose the parts, if proven stolen.

Which isn't going to tell me if the engine or transmission was pulled out of another '97 Crown Vic, unless of course the build date on the car is before the build date of the engine or transmission.

The problems with build dates is they can't match since powertrain are usually delivered to the final vehicle assembly plant ready to lift up into the vehicle.

What is really complicated is Ford diesels. Since the pre-6.7L motors are built by International Navistar, we have to go off the serial number on the engine which has no bearing on actual vehicle assembly date.
