Not sure if this should go in off topic or Consumer Electronics, so mods, please move if I put in the wrong place.

Sstrongly considering moving to a smartphone plan in the future. Partial to Verizon, as we are on an old family plan (700 minutes, no texting) - we've always gotten good service. Would consider AT&T as well, but Sprint is not an option.

I was messing around on Verizon's site and investigating the "Edge" program being offered - is there any savings here or is this purely for the people that want to upgrade phones quickly (not trying to bash we have always just been buy and keep for 2+ years). It seems like any monthly plan discount is more than offset by the monthly phone cost (phone cost/20 months). I just want to make sure I'm not missing some aspect that makes this worthwhile.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think you are. I've looked at it before as well, though only briefly. I can't say that I've done a thorough TCO analysis, though. My usual response to a new program that I can't live without is that I can live without it.

Edge is indeed targeted at people who want to upgrade more often, and who like the idea of $0 upfront. You are basically being loaned the upfront phone cost and paying back a portion every month.

They kept trying to force that on me when I needed a new phone. Your phone service is already expensive, why would I want to pay $20 extra month and still end up renewing my contract?
