Darn, I liked the "number of cylinders" theory. Three on each side for a V6, four on each side for a V8, and eight down the centre of the hood for a straight-8.The 3 and 4 holes represented the models place in the lineup not the number of cylinders. In later years they oblong slash panels eg the 76 Lesabre has 3 and the Electra had 4, both had 455 V8 engines. This for the 1955 models you can see plenty of V8 3 holers.
