Not sure if this should be here or in the off topic section. My wife and I are moving from Oregon to California in a couple weeks, I'm not going to be taking my ranger with me as it doesn't have air conditioning and the city we are moving to gets quite hot. We'd prefer to buy a vehicle in Oregon to avoid California sales tax while we still can, plus it would be handy to have another vehicle to move our belongings. Taking the ranger and selling it in CA is out of the question. It would likely be harder to sell since it doesn't have AC and it's a beater in the first place.
Since we do move soon, how do you all think it would be best to handle the registration situation? I can either wait a few weeks until we're settled in our new home and register with CA plates, or I can register in OR and essentially waste $250. The vehicle I'm leaning towards is registered in WA, just to add another layer of apparent difficulty.
Am I making this out to be more than it is?

Sales tax even if it's bought out of state? Would that still be applicable if I were to register in OR? That way I would be arriving with a vehicle I already owned in another state. Surely they wouldn't tax something I already owned, I would hope. They going to tax my furniture too?

They'll credit you the amount of sales tax you paid in the other state.

You can calculate the total payable at this link:

Re furniture tax, yes you will have to pay both sales tax and a hefty penalty on any non sustainable furniture imported into California.

Just kidding.

$181.... lame
No sales tax in Oregon where I'm buying the vehicle

Regarding the issue of registration, it sounds like it may be best to wait until we're settled before we handle that. Maybe I'll purchase a trip permit in OR.

California has this figured out every which way-and you cannot outfox the state. California cross checks-drivers license, vehicle registrations, and insurance information on all drivers and their respective vehicles. You will be caught if you try to do any "funny business".

California has vehicle tax-but no personal property tax (i.e. furniture). I hope you are going to California and will make at least $100,000/year. If not, life will not be comfortable.

I left the state in order to have a more enjoyable retirement.

Well that's a shame. Out of curiosity, would there be a tax levied against my Ranger if I were to bring that? Also, my wife bought her car in California before we met, that shouldn't incur any additional tax I hope.
As for income, we arent too worried. We're going to be in Bakersfield, the 'cheap' part of CA.

The best thing to do is to stay in Oregon. Taxes are obscene in California and they are going to get much worse as the gimmedats push for more free benefits off the backs of a dwindling taxpayer base. In case you haven't heard, productive taxpaying people are moving out.

Someone above mentioned a $100k salary minimum for a comfortable life. That's not enough in places like the Bay Area. Besides, the more you make, the more the State will take from you.

Yeah like $600k housing that I would burn down if it was here. Those dumps are $150k in most other states... No CA. For me!!!

Why buy that car if you don't want to get it registered ?

Get it registered and enjoy the car.

When we moved from Pa to Az registration took about 30 minutes. When my daughter moved from Az to Ca registering her 2002 Saturn (in 2008) took a solid 6 hours.

She moved back to Az 12/15 and she still gets notices and late fines for not registering her car in Ca even though she submitted the correct forms.

Good luck.

Can you buy a vehicle in Oregon and transfer the plates from your Ranger onto the new vehicle? Then you won't have to pay for a new Oregon registration you'll only use for a couple of weeks. Once you're in California, get new California plates on all the cars.

States I've seen don't make you pay sales tax (again) on a car you moved in with. The caveat is you must have had it registered in your name for a while... six months.

You should also see if you're due a one-time "smog impact fee".

If you already have a lease or living arrangements you might be able to register a new purchase early, but as said earlier in the thread that could take all day, especially if they make you switch your licenses over and all that.

That 10% tax is going to sting.
