Vegemite

I have it every day - just got home from work, and had Vegemite on toasted fruit loaf. I spread it on pretty think...you know you've got the dose right when the toilet bowl is yellow. Very much a Vegemite/Marmite battle goes on in NZ, very polarised groups. Everyone in the family knows never to give me Marmite.

PM me your address and I'll send you some.

That way you can tell us what you actually think, not what you think that you'll think and avoid it as a result.

I had to use that tactic with my kids up until they were 7 or 8, "how can you know unless you've tried it ???"

What???!!!!

Marmite is superior in every way. More vitamins, more concentrated so a little goes further and most importantly, far superior in taste.

Vegemite only exists because there was a shortage of Marmite after WW1. It is a poor imitation.

Right Charlie, You....Me....Outside......In the parking lot.....we need to sort this out man to man.

One of the La guys at work has too much fun with that stuff - he borrows some from the HSE Lead (from Taz) and will convince guys/gals to eat a big spoonful - the expressions are priceless ...
My favorite was this ratchet mouth dude that went into instantaneous face lock ...

Just my opinion but it is something you need to be brought up on to like barring the rare exception. Man, it about made me hurl when I tried it( on buttered white toast ). One bite was all I could do. I tried to do my best Andrew Zimmern Bizarre Foods two bite impersonation but couldn't get the 2nd bite past my lips.

Salty is an understatement and I actually love salty stuff. It was so salty it was inedible. The actual taste of it besides the salt was not pleasing either to me. Don't even want to discuss the smell for fear of inducing a flash back and triggering my PTVD( Post Traumatic Vegemite Disorder ). Couldn't shake the taste of it even with various liquids either. Had to brush my teeth and rinse with Scope to banish that foul stuff from my palette. YUCK!

With that said I defend other's right to eat it and like it. I am sure there are things I like that others don't. For me though this about sums it up...

I am usually pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new food. After reading your post, I am now even more intrigued to try it.

I've eaten stuff that most others don't particularly care for... blood sausage, lard spread, beef tripe soup, kimchi, etc, although I was brought up on most of it.

Looking forward to giving vegemite a try.

I will try most things too( within reason - no bugs, snakes, rodents, etc... and I will only eat some offal )hence me trying this stuff. Might just be the single worst thing I have ever tried. I mean no offense to those who like it but man it is just horrifically bad IMO.

PS - love Kimchi

Seriously, after a big night on the turps (drinking), a full desert spoon full of vegemite and a glass of water is an oft used Oz hangover preventer.

In my yoof I was told you could use it to bring you down from a LSD trip. I'm probably immune to LSD with the amount of Vegemite I eat.

They say if a medicine tastes good it doesn't work but if it tastes horrid it does work. Vegemite must work wonders as a hangover "medicine"! I also imagine it prevents hangovers in another way. Tie one on for the 1st time and be given a huge spoon of Vegemite to prevent a hangover would not only prevent the current hangover but it would also prevent me from EVER drinking again thus preventing any future hangovers as well.

Its pretty unpleasant, with an aftertaste. Marmite, OTOH, is ok.

Shortage after WWI??

Production diverted to some chemical weapons programme, perhaps?

I will be interested to hear what you all think.

After reading the thread, I'd like to try some of this stuff.

Since a kid, I've craved what I now realize is unami. I loved the salty, concentrated, deep, beefy/oniony/garlicy/veggy/roasted flavors I would only occasionaly find. Demi-glace was a revelation and became a key ingredient when I wanted to deepen a sauce, stew or chili. Top resturants know all about demi and always have it on hand as they make it from scratch. That's why their food, sauces & stews are known for a very deep, rich, amooth flavor that's "too die for".

Vegemite sounds like it would have a lot of these flavors, in a very salty concentrated form, which is a flavor I seek!
