Well... I'm in the market for a 5w-40 Synthetic.
I narrowed it down to Castrol & Synpower. Of these two oils, (Both group III) which would be your choice?

Thanks!

me? I went with Valvoline and stayed with valvoline. The castrol from the VW dealership was a tad more expensive and wasn't all that great.

i would pick whichever one was more readily available. i know syntec 5w40 is in nearly every autozone, but synpower 5w40 is a little harder to come by.

dont rule out rotella 5w40 at walmart for ~$14/gallon and ~$3.80/qt. some walmarts dont have it,but check it out.

what kind of a car is this going into?

I am trying castrol syntec 5w50 in my bmw. Just started but it seems to run very well. older bmws seem to like heavy oils. Even so, 5w40 seems just about right for this car. May try Valvoline next

A Mod should edit the spelling in the subject line in case someone is searching for "Valvoline". Since Terry chimed-in, it's a legitimate thread now.

-racer12306,

It's going into a 94' 1.8L Miata in Arizona desert heat. I have had 10w-40 in it before and it responded well to the thicker lube.

Synth 5w-40 seems like a great option.

I actually called Vavoline about Synpower 5w40 and asked if it was grp 3 or 4. There answer was grp 4.
dunno.gif

I have a hunch that Castrol Syntec 5w40 is also grp 4.

Straight from SynPower FAQ on Valvoline's website...

Is SynPower a full synthetic? Is SynPower motor oil PAO or ester based? Does it require a special filter?
Yes, SynPower is 100% synthetic. Synpower uses a proprietary combination of various types of synthetic base oils to obtain optimum performance. No, a special oil filter is not required with Synpower.

Check that Valvoline avoid to answer directly about the use of PAO or Ester. Tricky answer I suppose.

If terry says it's good stuff who gives a frak if it's PAO or ester? There is not a company in america or abroad that doesn't use this type of marketing.

It should also be known that there is an error on Audi of America's VW-502 Approved List. It lists SynPower 5w-30 as being VW 502-Approved, in the US...it is not. I wasted my time verifing this with a helpfull Valvoline tech, it's an error because the US formula is thinner (and possibly different chemistry/base). I pretty much knew ahead of time because the US blend was too thin not meet A3 and therefore not VW 502 either. In some engines the lighter viscosity would probally not matter. US SynPower 5w-30 probally would not be consumed or cause excess wear in a Audi 1.8t, but might in other apps calling for A3/VW 502 and actually needing the thicker visc, like the V6s.

Now, when nearly all manufactures made the move towards gr.III oils and call them synthetics, the fact that Valvoline also uses gr.III already does not matter. The most difficult was to be the first. Once it's done by the majority of manufacturers, others will hardly ignore competitive environment and go up-stream. I just refered to the MSDS in order to dissipate dreams.
