This car came into the shop for timing chains. Has 99k miles and has had a Valvoline oil change every 3500 miles like clock work. If I didn't see the maintenance records I wouldn't believe it. I know these engines are đź’© but wow!!

They didn't do the job. Even if it was short tripped, 3500 miles would be fine unless a mechanical issue like the thermostat not functioning well, but you said it's not throwing codes.
My sister had a 2010 Cobalt from new and I changed the oil with PUP, Gold Edge, and mobil 1 0w40 and it looked similar but it was only brought to my house every 10-15k miles. I did the valve cover gasket and was was ugly. I was shocked. Her trips are less than 10 miles.

Gonna need a lube with a stout add pack combined with excellent stock blends (base/esters/ANs).
HPL or Amsoil Signature comes to mind.

My 06 2.0 S/C Ecotec with 65k miles looked like new under the valve cover, just so clean. Steady diet of Mobil 1 and driven spiritedly....
Lower miles I know, but had never seen a cleaner valve train.

Assuming this GM 2.4 is direct injected, the combo of a poor PCV system, GDI and inadequate manifold vacuum ruins these engines.

Valvoline oil didn’t cause this. I question that the oil was ever changed at every 3,500 miles.
Records on car fax like that don't lie. Someone entered it in.....she took it in whether they did the job or not who knows 🤷‍♂️

Car Fax? Hhhaaaahhaaa
That goes with the old addage of only driven to Chruch by the little old lady.... Never believe that....ever. Always do your own inspections. If this car was for sale, the unsuspecting buyers would be hoodwinked....hhaahhaa hoodwinked..get it.:D
