I'm in center city Philadelphia tonight and the guy in front of me had a Jeep Liberty with a license plate that read: XMOBIL1 . I couldn't believe it. I thought I was the only oil freak in the area. Cool tag though, stole my idea.

so he's proud that he's no longer using the stuff?

Or he got laid off from ExxonMobil?

Or maybe the X simply stands for Exxon. So he's saying Exxon Mobil? (and he put a 1 behind it perhaps because XMOBIL was taken?)

Heres mine.

My sentiments exactly, Al. The county I live in recently enacted a $36 wheel tax. The tax is more than the cost of the tags. No way am I giving those &*%$#@%s an extra dime.

I'm not familiar with wheel taxes. What the h#*% are they basing the tax on? The more wheels you have, the more you pay?

Palut, they call it a wheel tax, but it's actually a vehicle tax, due on all registered vehicles regardless of the size, age, number of wheels, etc.

It's nothing except a way to raise extra revenue for the county. It's a very regressive tax, in my opinion, with the poor slob that drives a 74 Gremlin paying the same tax as someone who drives a new Hummer.

This wheel tax stuff is

from the vanity plate subject; but at least with the vanity plates you are getting something (unique plate) for your extra money, and it's voluntary........with the wheel tax, you either pay it or you can't register your car.

i'm not much for vanity plates, bumper stickers, or personalized plate frames. i could care less what cute saying you can make out of 7 letters/numbers. i don't care what you'd rather be doing, how spoiled you are, what your other car is, who you are voting for, what pet you have at home, nobody i see with a "cowboy up" sticker is does anything related to what a cowboy does, i don't care about your "jeep thing", i'm not going to flip you over if i can read your sticker...

Those personaized plates can be handy, though.

When I saw the California car with "SXULDV8" plates I knew to stay away. Far away.

Al, I recently moved into PA from NY. Overall, I must say Government is PA is cheaper for the taxpayer. I also agree that the cost of owning a vehicle, with the exception of insurance, is higher in PA. I just about fell over when I was charged over $100 to register my motorcycle. The same thing in NY would've cost me $31.

I own a cleaning company so I have a plate on my work van that says so. The 3' high lettering job might be a giveaway anyhow though....

PA I think leads the nation in specialty plates for organizations, colleges, etc. I have a college plate on my truck. I about fell over when I saw one for Greyhound Adoption, we have a retired racer, so my wife ran right out and ordered one. Sorta works with the "My Dog Is Faster Than Your Dog" sticker.

The only custom plate I'd have would have to look like a normal plate. It would have initials and letters in the same pattern as a normal plate. Customs are too easy to remember and I pass a lot on double-yellow.

One of my favorites was on a Buick. I can't remember the model, but I distinctly remember that the person had two stickers of the silouhetted naked woman in the back window with a rainbow sticker in the middle and a vanity plate reading:

THE69ER

My wife (then girlfriend) and I laughed our heads off, especially when we saw a middle aged woman driving.
