Valvoline VR1

Local performance shop is discontining their stock of 10w30 valvoline VR1 racing oil for $1.99/qt.

Would you use this oil in a daily driver and if so, at what kind of month/mielage intervals.

Oil would be used in a 1992 GMC Jimmy with 4.3LV6. Vehicle is not really a daily driver. It is my second vehicle that I drive mostly on the weekends. Previuos oil fills have been with Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 synthetic.

Yep,you can use it in a DD as told to me by Valvoline. They told me to change it at 3 months or 3000 miles.

VR1 is a conventional oil as far as I know. It should work OK in you 1992 Jimmy

Buy it all, even if you don't want to just use 100% VR-1, you can add 1 qt at a time for a add pack booster.

Buy it all! That is a fantastic price. I'm not sure on OCI but you can probably do the factory recommended. Valvoline always says to do a 3k OCI, so I wouldn't go by their recommendation.

That's the purple tinted SL rated VR1 syn that was FAR a couple years ago, has extra zinc in it, would be a great oil in anything that didn't have to use SN.

I'd be all over that at twice the price, especially if they have 10w30. It's basically a high zddp version of their mainstream oil.
If you don't want to run a full concentration, just mix it with mainstream Valvoline. I've been doing that.
The VR1 conventional holds up fine for a normal OCI, synthetic should do the same or better.
The oil you don't want is the one marked "not street legal". That one is a short-lived oil for real racing use. I don't think that product is labeled as "VR1" though.

VR1 synthetic is a higher-zddp version of Synpower, with 1000ppm of Phosphorous.

VR1 conventional is a higher-zddp verion of Valvoline conventional, with 1300ppm of Phosphorous.

Either of those would be excellent oils for your application at $1.99/qt. VR1 syn would be a screaming-good deal at that price.

I cleaned them out this morning. Purchased all 32qts. They are bringing in Royal Purple HPS and Redline due to slow sales of the Vr1. They said most customers look at it as an outdated oil compared to the RP and Redline.

Think 4 months OCI will be okay? I will never hit the mileage due to the GMC Jimmy only being used as a spare vehicle. It will not see 3000 miles in a year let alone 3 months. I probaly average between 2k and 2500 miles a year.

VR1 syn 10w30 can be used just as you would Synpower.
It appears to be the same oil with an extra dose of ZDDP, making it an API SL. It is also dyed a pretty shade of blue.
I ran this oil 5K in the Forester the summer before last, since it was FAR and Subaru allows the use of SL oils in the OM.
Now, if all you do is 2-2.5K a year on this Jimmy, one change each year would be plenty.
$1.99/qt for a name brand synthetic is a great score, so good for you.
