Valvoline VR-1, 20w50 - Any Good?

It seems I've heard guys talk about the older Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil, on this board. However, when searching, I found no direct thread.

Anyone know about this stuff?

The reason I ask is because I just scored some on clearance, for $2.99 /qt. from a local True Value hardware store. (Bought all 5 bottles). It seems like someone mentioned this was a good oil with lots of zinc. I assume it is a group III, and not a blend? (The bottle is dated 1999).
