valvoline synthetic blends....

One of my vehicles is 2004 2.5 subaru. 190ish miles..i was using 10w30 and 10w40 valvoline maxlife blends,500:1tcw mix and was experiencing some consumption,not leakage,engines been regasketed
Mr.Walton didn't have any 10w40 last trip in,so of course 15w40 in the same valvoline red bottle flavor went in..
Consumption has gone down a considerable amount.
What is in the diesel spec that has helped this out?

Whats a 500:1 tcw mix?

Could be just the viscosity is higher in the 15w40. They're both 40's, but there is an allowable range. Higher viscosity can reduce consumption. Or, maybe the rings finally freed up a bit after some oil changes, sealing better finally.

It's 500:1 2-cycle oil in the gas. It's interesting & works - might want to research it for fun.

I tried Maxlife 10w40 in a friend's '89 Ford 300-6 that was using/leaking a considerable amount... and it got worse. Went back to Rotella T 15w40 and it went back to using substantially less. Maybe just the breakover point where whatever is allowing loss in your engine seals up.

On the other hand, dad's Suburban has been on a steady diet of Maxlife 10w40 for the last 260,000 miles, starting at 170K, and it doesn't use much more now than when he started that regimen. I put Maxlife in at least 80% of the vehicles I service (mostly 5- and 10w30), have seen several that reduced consumption by as much as 40%, and several others come back in 5-7,000 miles later and the oil still looks real good.

Maxlife has been my go to...in 2burbs,a jeep,few different subarus. Thousands of miles.
Ive just never seen such a drastic change then this last change the 15w40..


So for testing purposes can you get your friend to run some maxlife 15w40 in his ford please?

Doubt it's anything to do with diesel. Lower spread means less VII which means a lower noack. Have you changed the PCV valve recently?

It is possible that the thicker bottom of that diesel oil, the 15w part, is
at least partly responsible for the reduction in oil use.
At the engine heats up, parts expand, cooling off they shrink back and open
tolerances.

Just a thought.

Just curious: what TC-W3 brand are you using?
