So I picked up some Valvoline Synpower 5w40 for $13.99 AUD. Have no idea what the oil is like, but the price was too good to pass up.

Any experiences with this oil? Also, any opinions on how suitable this would be in my S2000? It currently runs very well on Castrol EDGE 5w30 and burns no oil.

I bought 15 qts on clearance a few years ago at $2 a quart and been using it on an 06 accord 2.4 with 230k, have been doing yearly oil changes around 6K without any issues.

Should be fine. Iirc, 10w30 is specced in the manual. Less VI in the oil composition may work better for your engine.

I'm pretty sure 5W-40 is as well...

Thats correct.

I've read blog posts in the past about thicker weight oils reducing piston cooling efficiency of the oil squirters and also not adequately lubricating the bearings where the tolerances are tight - hence my hesitation!

You could mix a liter or two of Mobil 1 0W-20 (mostly PAO ) with it to thin it a little bit

They're still using the SynPower brand in Oz? That was retired in the US many years ago. The equivalent product in the US is called "Valvoline Full Synthetic".

That's not what's been said on this board. I thought thick oil was super popular over in hot Australia.

Yep! Still called synpower.

Actually, it's called "Valvoline Advanced".

I was thinking the current lineup. I haven't seen anything recently that says "Valvoline Advanced".

I think it would depend on the car. I used to use 10w50 in my old Commodore (GM 3.8 motor). It loved it.

I'm also in Melbourne, which heats up to 45C in summer, and midday max temps of as low as 10C in winter.

It is their current line up. The old Synpower has been called Valvoline Advanced for at least a year.

Check Valvoline's website. See where it says "Advanced". That's what Valvoline identifys it as, instead of "Synpower". They even say that on their website.

So what does the Ozzy owner's manual call out for viscosity on this vehicle?

I looked again. I got into a disconnect. However, SynPower was the description of their entire synthetic line. "Advanced" is just one of their offerings. There's "Full Synthetic Advanced", "Full Synthetic High Mileage", and "Full Synthetic Modern Engine".

What I'm clarifying is what Valvoline use to call "Synpower" is now called "Advanced". They say that right on their website. There's is nothing called "Synpower" now in the US market.

That is an excellent price in Australia !!

Was it the full-SAPS SynPower 5W40 (API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B3, A4/B4, MB 229.3, GM-LL-B-025, VW 502.00, VW 505.00, RENAULT RN710, RN700),
or the mid-SAPS SynPower MST 5W40 (API SN/CF, ACEA C3, MB 229.31, MB 229.51, BMW LL-04, Renault RN0710, RN0700, Porsche A40, dexos2-gen2) ?

Both are excellent oils, and both would work fine, but you could stretch the full-SAPS OCI a bit longer if you wanted too.

The Valvoline Australia net-lube guide, for the Honda S2000 (2006-2009) says to use either DuraBlend 10W30 or SynPower 5W40, so you should be fine.
