Valvoline Restore & Protect 5w-30 - Virgin UOA

Is Zinc a little low ? Usually I believe you see Zinc in the 800’s with SP rated oils ?
Good observation, noticed that as well. However, the good amounts of moly and boron could easily make up for the zinc, IMO. Personally, I be fine with a higher boron oil (and slightly lower zinc) as it is active from motor start up, it's not heat/extreme pressure dependent like zinc. That's my understanding anyway.

I'll be changing the oil on my 2010 Acura TL SH AWD with the 3.7 l engine tomorrow. It has a known ring defect (loose/not enough tension) that allows carbon buildup and increases oil consumption.

I've done my first oci with Restore and Protect 5w30. Have been diligent and keeping track of oil added, it's been one quart total at the 3500 mile mark. However it's down about a half quart on the stick and I'm not going to add more before changing it, so I will say 1.5 quarts in 3500 miles. Can't say oil consumption is down however Valvoline doesn't claim it happens in one oci. The second oci will be more interesting to watch, and I'll keep posting up.

No oil can help a defective engine. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Lol, there are some defects that are irreparable, this isn't one of them. Using simple logic combined with hands on mechanical knowledge/experience says carbon buildup is not a day one problem, it is cumulative. The issue is mitigated using an oil that is different than ones that have gone before. Absolutely an engine oil can make improvement on an issue such as this.

Can we really expect vastly different additives from one grade to another with R&P? For example, if a VOA was done on all the available ones on the market right now....0W20, 5W20 and 5W30...they'd all be pretty close in all the goodies we look at like calcium, moly, zinc, etc?

Or are they all their own unique formulation based on the results Val gets from testing?

I spied three different VOA on 5w-20, 0w-20, & this 5w-30. The add packs do appear to vary from one another. 5w-30 looks like more zinc as an example. In the second link you can see how much the 5w-20 varies from the 0w-20 R&P.

Looks like two different analysis companies. If they were from the same company I be interested. There's no reason for them to run that much difference between those two oils in my opinion. Is it the base oil that is the main difference? The stuff has been shown to clean, people are pulling apart filters showing carbon removal.

If you have a higher mileage older GDI engine and on a restricted budget, this is the oil to get for it. I just bought three jugs for my daughter's 2016 3.6 GMC Acadia with 85k accumulated.
Thanks for doing the VOA.

I’m on my 3rd oil change with this oil in wifey’s 2013 GMC Acadia with 188k miles on it. Runs like a top. 👌🏼 Doesn’t burn any significant amount of oil in 3k miles. 👍🏼

You may be able to get several five quart jugs in about 15-18 months, right after national chain auto part stores announce a hefty clearance price on this item. I'm guessing early introductory pricing may be around $5 more per jug, than what Valvoline EP is being sold for.
Which one is on clearance and where?

The only meaningful information that stands out from the other thread is that they seem to claim that it is an additive that is doing the work and not like the Blue Restore product which relied on Esters. That is now very clear from the VOA.
The MSDS discloses "PROPRIETARY SUBSTANCE OF HITEC 11188", but there's no information directly about that additive through Afton website or elsewhere.
That additive appears in all the Restore and Protect grades, but that's not necessarily relevant, it could be something else not even required to be disclosed.

I found a msds for the additive. Looks to be mostly zinc and phosphorous in a few different chemical forms in a oil carrier
