Valvoline Restore and Protect

I decided to try Valvoline Restore and Protect in my 1997 Suburban, which has 202,000 miles on the original 5.7L engine. When I got this Suburban about 5 years ago the thermostat was stuck open, and based on a review of the service records (complaints of no heat) it had been like that for quite some time. The engine was consuming a lot of oil, and I suspected some of the rings were stuck from the cold operating temperature, light throttle, and decades of cheap oil. Although I have been able to reduce the oil consumption down to about 1 quart per 1500 miles, I still think there is room for improvement.

Because this is a 2wd Suburban there is clearance for an oversized oil filter. Seemed like a good idea at least for the first OCI with the Valvoline Restore and Protect.

I am about 1000 miles into the OCI and have been giving it all the throttle therapy I can.

Need a bigger filter. Lol

Whether I keep running it depends on how well it performs within the 3,000 mile interval, it may very well become it's permanent oil going forward although I do prefer high mileage oils with additional seal conditioners in it.
I believe Valvoline would like you to run a 4K mile minimum oil change interval to optimize cleaning . Most people get best results running Valvoline Restore and Protect oil change intervals of 4K - 5K miles as Valvoline Restore and Protect is not a fast acting or aggressive engine cleaner - thus you may not fully realize Valvoline Restore and Protect’s engine cleaning ability with only a 3K mile oil change interval . Push your Valvoline Restore and Protect OCI’s out to 4K miles and then judge the results after 4 consecutive Valvoline Restore and Protect oil changes. If Hyundai / Kia engines - posters here believe a 5th consecutive Valvoline Restore and Protect OCI is needed to realize maximum results.

That NOACK number seems high for an oil that is supposed to help with oil consumption after cleaning rings .
They are being lazy and are just showing that it's less than the allowed max of 15% Noack. It could be much less than 15%.
I'll contact Valvoline and will let you know the exact Noack % of the Valvoline Restore and Protect. I believe it's about 10% but that info came out of AI.
I honestly don't care because the oil does its job and also shows excellent results on the UOA reports.
It's Noack. It's not capitalized. It's named after the guy who designed the test. (Even AMSOIL gets it wrong! Pablo I'm surprised you haven't straightened them out yet.)

We don't know what it is really. They just say it's below 15%.
Here it is the reply from Valvoline to my email sent out last Saturday. The interesting thing is that they replied to me next day (Sunday) at 3:00 PM.

My son’s f150 sees mostly 4 mile drives. Valvoline Restore and Protect has been in the sump since last fall. I checked the oil last spring and it still looked new so I left it. Will change it in the fall. Should have 4K miles, lol.

Anyone else used to think Valvoline wasn't a very good oil brand? I used to see Valvoline bulk oils at many car mechanic shops, and just assumed that it was because it was the cheapest oil they could get away with using.

Yes, I thought exactly that for some time. However, I used Valvoline MaxLife synth. blend (red jug) for about 8-10 years. It was my budget oil during that time. I think it did very well at 3K-4K miles.

THAT is a gynormous oil filter, bravo! I love the "all-in" 5 gallon container. I chickened out and did 5 gallon jugs. Hopefully Valvoline Restore and Protect helps restore this GM V8 back to health. After that long under less than ideal operating temps, keep us posted on how the story goes!

It took 7 quarts total to fill the pan and filter. Considering it has that much oil and the size of the filter, I don't see any reason to run a short OCI. I'll just keep an eye on it and plan to run it for my normal OCI of 5k.
