Valvoline Restore and Protect

Towpig LQ4 with 141k miles. This was after the 5th OCI of Valvoline Restore and Protect. Each change the filter has the typical small bits of dark debris that others have photographed/videoed. Those small bits were also observed in the head.

The EGR is contaminating the intake with a lot of soot. The cathedral ports have a noticeable section on the top where the injector is washing that clean. I'll likely remedy the EGR problem, since that's not doing the engine any favors. Doesn't seem unreasonable to imagine some of the EGR contamination makes its way into the ringlands and crankcase.

Once EGR is resolved, time to walnut blast.

I have a 23 Honda CTR and my last OCI was 7000 miles (HPL) and my OLM was @ 50%. Granted I drive significant expressway miles, but there is no way I'm running it down to the 15% oil life indicated. I'm fixin to start my 3rd OCI of Valvoline Restore and Protect on my beater 06 Civic DX with an unknown maintenance history .
how does the Valvoline Restore and Protect compare to the HPL? I've ran HPL the first three oil changes on my car but switched to Mobil 1 Extended Performance because I had to change my oil so often. was getting expensive!

I have a little over 2,000 miles on the current Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 fill . Twice now in the last several hundred miles I’ve “restarted” my car at a traffic light thinking the engine had stalled out. Instead of starting back up - I turned the engine off as it had been running the whole time . I haven’t done that before … My point is Valvoline Restore and Protect is very quiet in my engine to the point that I can’t feel the engine running a lot of the time . After a couple more OCI’s with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 I will get a used oil analysis to check wear numbers as predict like other Valvoline Restore and Protect used oil analysis here they will be pretty low. Lastly , cleaning is a bonus if using a certain oil that makes your engine so quiet that you can’t even tell the engine is running ?! I wait until the end of the 4K mile OCI to pass final judgement but so far I’m impressed .

Which car?

Be careful here when you claim an engine is quieter or noisier running a different oil than you usually do around here. It can get you into trouble. ;) Even though many of us, myself included have made similar claims over the years with various brands either making an engine quieter or noisier. IIRC I took some heat for more noise by changing brands to something I never used before.

Fourth oil change in the 2014 ATS is in!

First oil change in the 2017 ATS in in!

Four OCI's each and then it's on to my 0w40 stash for both.

Good point (lol !) … I’ll see if my claim holds up through the life of this current OCI as well as the next few OCI’s running Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 .

changed my oil with Valvoline Restore and Protect for the first time yesterday. one thing i noticed, is a slight sulfur smell to the oil. Kinda reminds me of ATF or Diff fluid. I wonder if that's related to the mystery cleaning compound.

never noticed a sulfur smell with Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

Red Line performance series. I'd want something that runs as clean as possible on its own.
Actually, Redline Performance oil runs rather "dirty" in my car. Valvoline Restore and Protect is the cleanest running oil in my car, nothing comes close of all the boutiques and top shelf top 3 name brands we all know in the USA I have used.

I was checking filters like others on both EC30 and Valvoline Restore and Protect - got nothing - but who’s to say that once liberated - piston top carbon won’t wind up in and/or need to pass the rings … I like the cohesive and/or adhesive theory for sure … but when broke up - was it surely in ring lands to start with?
So, whilst I’m in good faith company here - we have very limited actual studies in front of us right now …

It's doing it's job in my truck. Been a couple thousand miles on the first use and the oil is getting dark already. Im going to go ahead and change it again.

Especially going against the grain when my dB meter said Pennzoil Ultra Platinum was louder than Mobil 1 - BITOG howler monkeys were higher than my meter could reach 😵‍💫
LOL Been there done that. Sometimes silence is golden in many ways, like refraining from commenting about sound around here. ;) I often wonder why mechanics listen to engines as part of diagnostics, you know for ticks, taps, knocks, or any other detectable sounds that are different or abnormal. Best to hide again.

A piece of PVC pipe and a good ear can pinpoint a problem in no time.
