Valvoline Restore and Protect

I totally have to ignore the wife's Honda Accord's OLM recommendation. It will only get to the 15% oil life / time to change at about 10,000mi. That is gambling, or asking for dirty engine or future issues no mater what expensive Gold Standard oil anyone would use.
I am a long time "boutique" oil user from over 25 years Amsoil use and as of late in wife's car a user of HPL. Still not ever doing 10,000mi.
Autos are far too expensive to own and upkeep to go cheapo on oil or long extended oci IMHO.
I have a 23 Honda CTR and my last OCI was 7000 miles (HPL) and my OLM was @ 50%. Granted I drive significant expressway miles, but there is no way I'm running it down to the 15% oil life indicated. I'm fixin to start my 3rd OCI of Valvoline Restore and Protect on my beater 06 Civic DX with an unknown maintenance history .

Couple of weeks ago I sent an email to Cummins in the UK requesting a quote for some Valvoline Premium Blue Restore for our Transporter & Volvo.

Well today I had a phone call from a technical manager within Valvoline here in the UK who has just returned from the US learning about Valvoline Restore and Protect. It's coming to the UK around February and will come in higher viscosity options more suited to our engines. In the meantime, they're going to try find me a sample to try!

I'm so excited! :ROFLMAO:

Hopefully it does. I would like to try it in the F150. Thinking I am going to get some to try in the wife's old Avenger until then, just to see.

You can bet if another oil could reverse piston ring deposits completely they would be jumping on the Valvoline Restore and Protect bandwagon. It’s just too popular. I bet others will eventually follow suit.

I do believe HPL and AMSOIL Signature Series can keep pistons almost factory clean even in severe service and extended oci’s. I also believe they can remove some piston deposits. The question is to what extent?
You don’t need any of these - just do Italian tuneups hundreds of times …

Problem engine imho
The over all engine history would agree with you ! Valvoline Restore and Protect may never eliminate oil burning in this engine - we’ll see after a couple more OCI’s to clean any residual deposits from the time I used Quaker State Ultimate Durability , Castrol Edge and Castrol Magnetec . The rest of the time was Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 , a time or two with Mobil 1 vanilla 5W30 before the switch to Mobil 1 ESP 0w30. A higher HTHS is this engines friend - at least Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 has a HTHS of 3.2 although the Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 with an HTHS of 3.5 is probably better yet . Lastly , no OCI’s over 4,000 miles / 6 months even though driving pattern is now up to 70% highway & interstate after moving .

So , today I changed the 2021 Kia Seltos 2.0L Nu engine oil to its 3rd straight OCI using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 . I paid attention to the noise level at the end of the current 2nd Valvoline Restore and Protect fill at 4,600 miles and found nothing alarming or unusual to report . Was the new fill (3rd) of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 more quiet and a little smoother ? Yes it was but so have new fills of previous decent synthetic oils , so again nothing unusual to report . I found Valvoline Restore and Protect is generally quiet through the entire OCI in what I consider a less refined Kia engine (versus Toyota and other more refined engines). Therefore my unscientific opinion is growing engine noise over the course of an OCI with Valvoline Restore and Protect is pretty much engine dependant .

Well, I am officially in the "I'm impressed" camp. Valvoline Restore and Protect has done something to my Corolla that is quite a surprise. Since last Aug/Sep or so, it's had a startup "tick" noise from the passenger side that will typically last up to a minute or more (that will slowly fade until it stops). I assumed that it was either a lifter noise or possible gunk in the VVT solenoid? A BPR flush did nothing to it. After only 300 miles on the first OCI, the noise has almost completely subsided! I say almost because I did notice it one day last week after having sat for 3 days, it lasted maybe 5 seconds and was faint. So strange (and great) to start the car and to just hear the sound of a 1ZZFE.

I truly am surprised by this and the speed at which it happened. I'm only 700 miles into the interval. Also, the old girl uses maybe 3/4-1qt per 5k. We'll see if anything happens on that front. I'll update this thread; as there are plenty of other Valvoline Restore and Protect threads already. I kind of wish I would have pulled the valve cover for a baseline but still may soon just for grins.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Please continue to update! I suspect your oil consumption will improve greatly.

I'm going to have a valve cover photo too soonish. My leak is getting bad enough that my gasket will need to be replaced. I don't have a before, but I know the oil change history was basically conventional oil annually before me.

4,000kms into 1st OCI. No noticeable consumption (wasn’t before either) and the oil is still relatively clear on the dipstick of this 11 year old turbo DI ATS I purchased. View attachment 286857

Going to replace with OCI 2 tomorrow before a big road trip and cut open the filter.
This interval went 7,000kms, included towing 2,000kms, and a bottle of Redline SI1. No idea what the insides look like but the oil came out visually healthy, no awful smell or excess fuel. I cut open the filter if that interests anyone:

That 2.0T LTG did not burn any noticeable oil that I could tell on the dipstick. No oil added. Towing & climbing inclines in top gear under boost, 4,000kms of highway, I don't think the engine down shifted once on those big climbs. Averaged 9.3L/100kms on the return trip with the top box, 2 people, 2 dogs, and a full load with a cruise locked highway speed of 118km/hr.

I don't think the not downshifting is a good thing. That's how LSPI gets you.

Agreed.... the first few hills I contemplated over and over about switching to sport shift and downshifting. The ATS allows you to shift AND maintain cruise... which is a nice feature. But at 118km/hr the engine was around 2300rpms. I do have a tune with a more aggressive logic, so I was surprised it did not automatically downshift.

I'll be honest... got addicted to that turbo "BRRrrrrr" as it climbed ;)

Asked Valvoline about chance of a 5w40 or 0w40 soon and got this.

thank you for contacting Valvoline Product Support with your question.

We have not been provided with any plans to offer Valvoline Restore and Protect in these viscosities in the future.

Obligatory "Long time reader, first time poster intro"...
Just sharing my experiences with Valvoline Restore and Protect with 4 vehicles -

2001 Kia Rio 1.5 (200,000km / 125,000 miles) - Running Valvoline Restore and Protect 10w40 - Engine runs a lot smoother and is noticeably quieter on cold start-up than previous other synthetic oils used. The car had obviously missed some services in previous ownership. Opening up oil filter there were quite a few black gritty carbon deposits in the filter after running Valvoline Restore and Protect. Car burned a little oil but this has now reduced to nearly zero after a few services on Valvoline Restore and Protect. Engine loves this stuff.

2009 Honda Accord K24 (90,000km / 56,000 miles) - Running Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 - Previous owners had not been kind. Car still run well but was burning oil about a quart every 3000 miles. After running Valvoline Restore and Protect the oil burning has completely disappeared, it now doesn't use a drop of oil. Assuming it has freed the piston rings. This happened after the very first service on Valvoline Restore and Protect. Car runs very well on this oil. Opened up oil filter, and there were some deposits.

2009 Kia Cerato (Forte) Koup 2.0 (135,000km / 84,000 miles) - Running Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 - Car has been very well looked after. Engine still looks brand new inside. Never burned oil. Car happily runs of Valvoline Restore and Protect - might assist with any piston deposits that cannot be seen. Oil filter caught zero deposits but this isnt a suprise. Cold startup is noticeably quieter.

2009 Suzuki Swift 1.4 (115,000km / 71,000 miles) - Running Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 - Engine has been well looked after. Runs well on Valvoline Restore and Protect. No deposits in oil filter. Doesn't run any better or worse on Valvoline Restore and Protect. No change to cold start-up.

I will be exclusively using Valvoline Restore and Protect moving forward. There have been zero downsides. Also running Valvoline Restore and Protect 10w40 in a 1996 Ford Falcon 4.0 and another 2009 Honda Accord K24 with 360,000km / 224,000 miles running Valvoline Restore and Protect 10w40, but too early to see if any benefits are to be had. Both cars are running well on it.
