Valvoline Restore and Protect

Before running Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 the wife’s Seltos 2.0L MPI engine tan a steady diet of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and then 0W30 ESP with <5K mile OCI’s . At 3,750 miles into the second fill of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 the oil is relatively clean looking - really almost new looking . That could be a good or a bad thing as I’ve not seen an oil look like this before nearing the end of an OCI ? No matter , I’ll stay the course for at least two more Valvoline Restore and Protect oil changes before deciding to stay with Valvoline Restore and Protect or go back to Mobil 1 .

When cleaning up my old engine that had had annual conventional oil changes for many years, I was surprised that the Valvoline Restore and Protect looked as clean as it did even up to 2000 miles when I changed it. Got a fair amount of debris out of the filter. This run, it has already darkened a bit at just under 1000 miles. I wonder if it had to loosen to the deposits a bit the first run and now it's starting to clean more. It's still just a dark honey color, but in the first run, it was hard to even check my oil level because the oil was so clear.

All of their marketing materials have all been updated, but if you look around online you can find references to the claim, like below.

Of course, maybe I (and the others) am just misremembering. But I feel like we talked about this change in this monster thread at some point before.

Yes indeed. Like I said I have seen many posts referencing "four" or "up to four" OCI but I have never found those words from Valvoline, they were all misreadings or misunderstandings.

Did first w/ Valvoline Restore and Protect on a 2010 Prius w/ 140k on it. Ran it for 5k. Engine would consume 1/2 qt-3/4 qt in that time frame prior to Valvoline Restore and Protect, it consumed zero and oil was definitely dirty-looking when it came out vs. the previously ran M1 which would still look fairly clean at the end. Filter was very dirty and I noticed some carbon like bits in it.

In for another round of Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Some have noted increased engine noise halfway through their OCI's but I noticed no change in engine tone throughout those 5,000 miles.

Current Valvoline Restore and Protect advertising says "four or more consecutive oil changes at standard maintenance intervals". So that basically says it could clean up to 100% of deposits with 4 OCIs on some engines. And running shorter OCIs than the "standard maintenance interval" could reduce the effectiveness of four OCIs.

Did you notice any shortage of Valvoline Restore and Protect at your local Walmarts?

I just came back from a local store and they only had 0W-20 (5qt jugs) in a corner and 1qt bottle going for about $10.
Here is a picture. You cannot see any Valvoline Restore and Protect jugs because the 0W-20 was hiding on an opposite shelf next to Mobil 1 oils, interesting?!?
I didn't take a picture of the 1qt bottles, but they were plenty.

My local Walmart was stocked full of pretty much every Valvoline 5-qt jug under the sun a couple weeks ago, including tons of Valvoline Restore and Protect in all flavors.

So per Valvoline, this oil uses a specific new additive technology. It's not done through the use of esters like their Premium Restore Cummins product. They also said that anything the oil comes in contact with it will clean. My thinking this oil could theoretically clean intake valves.

It cleans by dissolving carbon slowly is what they say.
That sounds like a very good thing. Slowly.

Bought 2 jugs today, they had 30+ each on the shelves of Valvoline Restore and Protect, EP, and other flavors.

I don't like that they didn't keep the spillproof lid spout with the Valvoline Restore and Protect. That sucks.

It is really silly how the oil companies have been able to play so many of us (yeah , the much younger me too) like a fiddle over the years. They have used all of those fancy labels, the colorful packaging and best of all.... The never ending but always changing broad bragging claims splattered all across the backs of the jugs of oil. It is really funny how one can stand there in the oil aisles of stores and look and see two different jugs of the very same oil , same company with different claims. One will have all of the boasting like 100x more cleaning power / 50x more heat resistant etc... Then the jug next to it with the supposed to be very same oil will have a bunch of different bragging.
The bottles look brand new and as if they got shipped and stocked at the same time yet even with all of the same exact specs ... different boasts about why it is so greatly superior than the bottle of the same oil right next to it!

2001 F150 5.4L 115K. Was my father in laws till he died. Mother in law drove it for the last 8 years. Who knows what oil was used prior. Today my 16 year old is driving it. 1100 miles on the first round and it was pretty dark looking. Running their same oil again. Will be cutting open the filter tomorrow. It’s definitely doing some cleaning.

Why stop at 4?
If I do 6 services I can get 150%. Such a deal!
