Stick with either 3-4-5k OCIs, for best results.

I know I’m going to get flamed for this but I really like LiquiMoly MoS2 additive. A lot. I put it in everything. I swear the stuff works.

But, is there any possibility it affects the cleaning ability of Valvoline Restore and Protect?

It fights for surface affinity. No point in an antiwear(?) focused additive when the goal of use with Valvoline Restore and Protect is cleaning. At a minimum, it could reduce its effectiveness. To what degree, no way to know.

How does it work?

Everything I’ve put it in gets measurably better fuel economy.

I rebuilt an engine that had been using it and it spun over easier with the cylinder head off than any time before I had an engine like that apart and spun it over. I know that’s not a fair comparison because I’m comparing two different engines but they’re the same engine in manufacturer, displacement and design so I am used to feeling the similarities between them.

I’ve heard of the stuff, but never really thought much of it.

I see advertisements saying how it cleans and such… you know, it does what oil does. I hope all previous Valvoline products have been doing this.

This is like a water bottling company bragging about their new water being able to keep one hydrated.

Since Moly is a coating product and Valvoline Restore and Protect is a cleaning product, logic would have it that they may complete for space or cancel each other out. I would only use one. Ideally, get the engine sparkling clean, then use the moly.

FWIW - I tried the MoS2 additive in a bunch of vehicles and really wanted to like it. But I found no discernable difference in noise, heat, fuel mileage or power. Even after using it for multiple OCIs. I gave up on it.

CHeck out some of the used oil analysis for Valvoline Restore and Protect and ask yourself how much better an additive could really make them. The used oil analysis I've seen a pretty dang impressive and don't leave much room for an additive to "fix" anything.

I am currently on 2500km with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30. I noticed one thing odd. After not driven the car for some time like 2 weeks, when I check the oil on the dipstick, the oil is super black. I then wipe the dipstick and put it back, and pull it again, the oil is honey colored. Other oils do this also, but the first check is not as black is Valvoline Restore and Protect. But the question is why is the oil on the dipstick black after sitting for some time, then when I reinsert its not black anymore ?

Maybe Valvoline Restore and Protect has enough moly on its own haha

I think it does. Eventhough it is 5W30 my engine sounds better than with 5W-40

Yes, interesting. But it says steel pistons. Most cars nowadays have aluminum pistons with " additives" usually thermally sprayed on the skirts.

Here’s my latest update on how Valvoline Restore and Protect is doing in my Civic. Before I started using Valvoline Restore and Protect my Civic was consuming about 500ml every 8000 km. I’m most of the way through my second interval with it and over the past 3800km I have only needed to add 100ml of oil. So it’s cut my consumption by more than half after using it for just over 16,000km. I’m going to do one more 10,000 km interval and then I’m switching over to ESP x2 0w20.

Because it’s not available in Canada and even when I cross the border into Niagara Falls NY they don’t stock it in the closest Walmart and even when I drive an extra 40 minutes I have had a hard time finding it in the other Walmart there. The last time I crossed the border I ended up having to get it at Autozone and it was almost $40 (about $60 CDN) I can get ESP here for $43 CDN. And I’m still not convinced that Valvoline Restore and Protect is the right choice for doing 10,000 mile intervals. I feel like it’s more of a 5-6k oil.

For me I’m happy that it’s achieved what I wanted, a very good reduction in consumption. If ESP 0w20 doesn’t keep the consumption at the same lower level I can always switch back to Valvoline Restore and Protect later.

I saw a sign at a carwash / detailer in Cambridge (Ont) last week advertising Valvoline Restore and Protect oil changes. Word is on the street!

I priced Valvoline Restore and Protect shipped in from RockAuto about a month ago and it was about $70-75 a gal all in. :/
