Valvoline Restore and Protect

60 hrs into my first OCI with Valvoline Restore and Protect. Changed the Cart filter @800miles on the 16 Jeep Grand Cherokee, looked fine. I should hit ~3k miles at 90 hrs. Will probably change at that point and then go to 4k oci the nest few times. 113K miles or about there now. No known sludge issues, but it did quiet down a valve lifter after a short time into this first run. I'm running the 5w30 Valvoline Restore and Protect , and usually run a Xw-30 oil.

As someone who has read BITOG for years, it’s oddly refreshing to see a new oil actually come out and get discussed. So used to reading reviews from like 2014, since nothing new really comes out.

This whole chain has got me to buy two 5 quart jugs though. I fortunately/unfortunately don’t have anything old to try them in, and my oldest car, a 2020 WRX/STI I’d like to stick with a 40 weight. I will be trying this in my 2024 RAV4 Prime and 2024 Prius Prime though; I’ve been flirting with a few different oils, and ironically just started the normal Valvoline in the RAV today.

I don’t foresee any huge changes, but still an intriguing option.

Ran this for almost 4k miles in my 05 Element k24, 230k miles. Doesn't burn anymore as I got that down to minimal over the last 2 years of ownership. I am using Valvoline Restore and Protect to finish cleaning the varnish off the lobes. When I bought it most were varnished with little metal showing. And no not antifreeze in the oil just oil. I did change the filter at ~2k and may due that again, idk.

I had a picture of the dipstick as it was cleaner as well but must have deleted it. I just wiped with my finger inside the cap area as it was hard before and needed brake cleaner to remove, now just wiped off.
Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 went back in for another 3k oci.

Following up with this, she came yesterday for a PCV valve swap. She drove 970 miles since the change and her dipstick level hasnt gone down much. I did topped off with another half quart of HPL Engine Cleaner so now it has 3.5 quarts of Valvoline Restore and Protect with 1 quart of EC 30.

Took some shots of her fill port as a baseline reference.

I got your back, in 5 months or less ill post some pics of the friends KIA oil fill port cleaning progress.

Its been 3018 miles since the oil change, she sent me these pictures yesterday morning when the car was cold before commuting to work. The oil consumption rate on the KIA Rio is starting to flatline at a decreasing rate. Oil dip stick pics are from 1000 miles of progression. The pink towel pic is from 2000 miles, and the darker oil dipstick is from 3018 miles.

He's been saying from the very beginning it doesn't work even though he had no reason to believe it wouldn't. He then tried to claim other oils all claim to do the same thing and I had to remind him about 100x that cleaning sludge and piston deposits are two different things. 1,082 post later he's still unconvinced. To each their own.

Sludge I believe is easier to clean while piston deposits and varnish can prove to be much more challenging to remove .

I could live with that. You figure if that's after a 1000 miles, if it stayed at that rate of consumption for a 5k mile OCI, you probably would need to add a quart.

Shes actually very happy with the current results. It was actually a whole lot worse as it consumed over half a quart for the first 1000 miles until the PCV valve swap and oil top off.

This photo was the oil level at 1000 miles after top off dumping the remaining half quart bottle of HPL Engine Cleaner 30 to the Valvoline Restore and Protect. Later followed by the pink towel dipstick pic at 2000 miles. So we both concluded that there is ongoing improvement at 3018 miles and will continue to monitor until 5000 is reached.

There are a lot of YouTube videos out there now where guys are doing borescope recordings before and after running Valvoline Restore and Protect and it's definitely working pretty well for most users. Lots of people are also saying that their engines that were oil burners see a drastic decrease in oil consumption after running it. So real world use seems to verify the claims.

I’m going to run this next oil change in my sons Kia Rio and in my other sons Santa Fe. Just changed the Santa Fe oil with Supertech 5w30. Noticed a slight amount of usage last oil change. 1/4 quart in 4K. It has the infamous Theta II engine, so some Valvoline Restore and Protect may do it some good.

Update on my oil consumption and for those wondering about the oil in general. Should be particularly interesting to those with a H/K 2.4L consuming oil. See below:

The first picture, Trip A with 755 miles, was from today. The dipstick shows about a quart low. 755 miles is how long since adding a quart. I have about 3800 miles on this oil currently, and I will be changing it at 5k miles. This is my second oil change out of four planned.

2nd picture of the dipstick was from two weeks and 1500 miles ago (Trip A with 536 miles).

Its not exciting but intriguing I think. I have over 6700 miles driven using the Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Technically, it's more miles than that, I'm just not sure how much. I did buy a jug of Valvoline Restore and Protect and added a few quarts to top off my oil from the dealer fill, which was 5W20 and consuming about a quart every 500 miles.

1/4 quart oil used in 4K miles is extremely low for a Theta II 2.4L engine ! I’d say you were doing well with what ever protocol you were doing .

Just oil change every 4K. Anything from Havoline, to Napa to Supertech. Techron every 4K (doesn't do anything for intake valves, but Hyundai calls for it in the maintenance section.) Only had the car a year. Had 44K when we bought it. Dealer serviced before we got it. Seemed to be every 5-6K.

I get the same impression so far. Pretty impressive too being you can't visually see your pistons being cleaned. The testimonials are based on other engine components you can visually see, and oil consumption etc. It's important to remember too that this product is designed to clean at a slower rate. It's not a flush/one and done type product.

Time to start thinking about moving to the SP Standard 40w Village Urshurak.
I'd use SP Standard 10w30 next and go from there. I bought four six packs Mobil 1 Euro 0w40 on sale a couple weeks ago. Good for 4-5 OCIs. I've never had oil loss in my 2.4 yet. But I suspect I'm only a year or two away.
I'll nip it in the bud early when it happens. I'm already toying with the 0w40, blending it with10w30 EP Triple Action.

So, did an oil change on my wife’s 2024 Prius Prime today. Engine instantly seemed quieter; admittedly it was running the Mobil 1 0w16 prior. Given that she drives it mostly electric on her day to day, and only really gets about 10 miles “gas” during the week, it’ll be a weird oil change/OCI for her.

It’s our first quasi electric, so I still plan on doing 3k mile OCI since I enjoy burning money.

You might recall it was Valvoline using the borescope when they tried to make a go with VME …
I have one jug left - might use it in the Jeep …

It is amazing to me how long this thread has run about one simple new package of motor oil. I do not think I have seen another thread run near this long about any particular oil. If one did I would guess it was either about an oil from Mobil or Castrol.

I can see what you mean.

I'm a newer member of the site and user of the Valvoline Restore and Protect so maybe that's why I don't mind. But as a long time lurker and researcher on DIY car maintenance, selecting the best oil, and more recently, battling consumption, I'm not the least bit upset another oil besides Mobil 1 is getting some recognition.

I cheer just a bit when I see someone using Quaker State too, another oil I've used and really liked. Never had any issues with it. And don't see nearly as many people using.

I think that QS doesn’t get enough attention out there but I have been recommending it on other places on the internet as it is such a great value for under $24 for Ultimate Protection. I am running it in my Civic right now and will be switching to Valvoline Restore and Protect for a few clean up intervals but I will likely be switching back to Quaker State Ultimate Protection after that

For those of us that have been on here long enough there were lengthy posts about the green German castrol synthetic 0W30 back in the early 2000's. It was THE oil to use at the time and was purportedly a super secret formula blended by elves. I scored over 50 quarts of the stuff when Auto Zone had it on closeout (visited 5 or 6 stores in my quest). I ended up using it for several years in my vehicles at the time. I can't imagine doing that now...different time...different priorities.
