With a used oil analysis, but sludging the motor and reducing oil flow thru it will happen before it's severely damaged.

I can not. But I can tell you my oil consumption sucks.

Understood. I wouldn't be surprised though if a member here did indeed know that their non OEM extended OCI interval caused issues, but kept quiet due to embarrassment.

Most likely seen by excessive deposits & varnish and oil consumption due to stuck rings, and maybe some decreased performance and fuel economy. But it's still not going to "blow-up".

Has anyone come up with a conclusion about the use/replacement frequency of the oil filters when using these oils such as Valvoline Restore and Protect or regular HPL yet? I have been using HPL with short oci and have used their oils only and none of the special cleaners. My experience has been the HPL Premium PCMO I have been running seemed to have cleaned some on their own. With these GDI-T engines it is simply not a surprise to see some quick color change to the dark side (as turbos are famous for this). What has been a pleasant surprise is that running short ocis I have seen the oil on the dip stick slowly stay cleaner longer. I do in fact replace the filters each time. I have wondered with a product like Valvoline Restore and Protect is there any offered advice as to how to handle the use/swap out of the oil filters when running any Valvoline Restore and Protect oils. Just wondering if it is as efficient as they claim it to be it would seem for safety sake one would possibly need to replace filters a bit more often.

I just replaced the filter after 5k miles on HPL Euro. No cleaning beforehand and 65k on vehicle. I looked between each pleat and there was nothing. It's waiting in a paper towel wrap for a second look. My engine must be really clean.

Some owners prefer to take steps to ensure the mechanical health of the engine is keep in top condition - ie, use good oil, do decent OCIs, use filters that keep oil cleaner, use efficiency air filters, etc. There are many ways to achieve that goal, and there are ways to derail that goal by lack of maintenance or using inferior products. Some people care about it, some don't. "Useful life" of a vehicle all depends on the owner's definition.

I'm debating getting some 5w-20 for my '19 Impreza. Calls for 0w-20 but temps don't normally get below 0F here. It would be a six month OCI but probably closer to 2000-2500 miles. I'm going to Wildwood at the end of the month so it would get ~350 miles in a week then only be driven for gigs and whatever else I have. I have 2 other cars that get the majority of the miles. Car is low mileage to begin with. Only 23k on it now. Been on PUP and PP for the past 4 years. Decisions, decisions...

So when I buy a used vehicle I always change the spark plugs and wires and I also change the air filter, just normal maintenance stuff. I did that the day I bought it and I just started keeping up with gas per tank mileage and it really sucked, even after changing the stuff I mentioned. It was about midway through the 2nd run of Valvoline Restore and Protect I started noticing that the mileage per tank going up. I’m no expert on anything but it had to be the Valvoline Restore and Protect making the engine more efficient as it got cleaner, just like it was when it was new I’m guessing.

Seems like a weird way to track fuel mileage. I never get the same mileage per tank because for one I never fill up at the exact same level on (not so accurate) fuel gauge...plus my driving habits change from day to day. I can get 12 mpg one tank and 19 the next.

Your dilemma is using a different winter rating? That's dictated by your expected starting temperature. If you're above -30 or so then any oil with a 5W rating is appropriate. At 0F there is no predictable difference, the 0W rated one may be thicker.

Has anyone been able to find the Valvoline Restore and Protect in Ontario , Canada?.. I chatted with Valvoline's online chat and they have no clue, I called their Global Operations team at 1-800-832-6825 and they have no clue.. I tried to get a hold of someone at Valvoline here in MIssissauga and their Voice system does not allow a front desk option (0), I need to know someone's name..

Never thought it would be so hard to find a product.

I'm in Ontario Canada and have not seen it anywhere.

I also have 4-6 more 5qt jugs of PP lying around for that car. So, do I want to change oil brands temporarily? Do I want to spend money when I don't need to yet? If I buy 2, should I use one for another car (18 Legacy) that gets 6m/6k oil changes with Mobil 1 Extended Performance? And I'm sure my brain is asking itself a bunch of other questions too.

Don't bother you're already golden as is. Actually you could OCI just once a year.

Warranty time frame? I got 10yr/100k mile warranty. If you are talking about the OCI, it's either or. With my Legacy, 6m and 6k work out to be the same. In this car since I don't drive as much, it ends up being time.

What else was changed? base oil is different aswell, what about the viscosity index improvers? they are comparing 2 TOTALLY different products.

Yeah, TOTALLY different.

yest those are not ash deposits, they're hydrocarbon deposits

Yeah that was discussed in the past. Kind of a flawed test. I don't know if SA is related to IVD's or not.

Everybody cries out for controlled tests and empirical evidence, until it comes out, then it's ~flawed~.

You can sneak over to NY State (or Michigan, depending on loc), do an oil change, and smuggle it back in your engine's oil pan!
