Valvoline Restore and Protect

What I find interesting are new users of Valvoline Restore and Protect who previously did 3K to 5K OCI’s with off the shelf name brand synthetic oils who are encountering varnish , carbon and sludge issues ? That would make me want to consider using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 full time and not for just a few cleaning OCI’s .

My goal with Valvoline Restore and Protect is to test its piston cleaning ability and get oil consumption to a normal range. Then my next test will be to see if my next oil choice is able to keep those pistons clean. But I don’t disagree, can be run for the life of the vehicle.

What are you considering for your next oil after Valvoline Restore and Protect? As I have mentioned, my short list after completing my time with Valvoline Restore and Protect in my Civic includes PUP, Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage or Castrol EDGE Extended Performance

Either ESP 0w30 which I use already in many other vehicles or Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage.

apparently new sds is showing gtl for Valvoline Restore and Protect (i think it didnt have gtl b4) but i assume we all won't be able to try the new formulations until all the old stock is cleared out from shelves

any one have info on this?

Given how popular it is, I don’t think it would take too long for most places to sell their old stock, especially in Walmart.

Not much honestly, typical resource conserving api oil. I prefer euro approvals if shopping at Wally or something like HPL/AMSOIL Signature Series online.

I’m 2300 miles into my second interval with Valvoline Restore and Protect 0w20 in my 2016 Civic and I just added 100ml of top up. The dipstick on this car, like my Corvette, is difficult to read because it gives a totally different reading on one side compared to the other
The Civic used to consume about 1/2 a quart every 5000 miles before using Valvoline Restore and Protect, so it’s already looking like the second interval has cut the consumption in half, if not more (will know better once I finish the full 6k interval that I plan to do here)

No game changer - but figure valve trains benefit some …

I really liked the digital display for the oil level that my ex wife’s BMW had. There was no guesswork involved there, as soon as that level moved down one notch on the dashboard I would add 200ml. I wish all of my cars had that.

Yes! Actually Valvoline Extended Protection made my Subaru valve train much quieter. I always figured it was the moly.

This works well……I’ve been checking oil level kinda like this for years. Really just need to leave the dipstick out for a few hours. Or just check it 1st thing in the morning.

I always do my oil level check after it has been sitting for a long time and is fully cooled down.

Just did some research, apparently AramCo spent a lot of money investing in a GTL startup to license the technologies to implement in their production fields in 2014 and is using them heavily in their Jefurrah Natural gas field. It is apart of their base oil catalog and I wouldn’t be surprised if they push more of it into Valvoline Products.

Yes, see post #1981. I’ve switched all my vehicles plus the ones I maintain to Mobil 1 ESP 0w30. In 2018 when I bought my new Outback I believed 5k oci’s with any full synthetic oil would keep my pistons clean, I was wrong. My next new vehicle will get HPL, AMSOIL Signature Series or Mobil 1 ESP(if it passes my test) at the first oci.

Everyone has preferences. But ESP presses some pretty stringent testing for its approvals especially as it pertains to cleanliness and staying in grade. I personally switched to ESP 0w30 after my 4 OCIs in my civic. Runs smooth as silk.
