Valvoline Restore and Protect in Toyota Prius with 291K miles

Um, yes. I'd like this car to last for at least 5 more years.
I do hope your hybrid battery gets you there.

Clean the hybrid battery cooling vent.

Highest quality motor oil will ultimately influence both durability and oil consumption, much more so than viscosity.

Sure.

Solid choice from what I’ve saw results here 👍
Let's hope so.

Earlier today I picked up the Harbor Freight version of the Mighty Vac and ordered some HPL EC30 for the Accord. The plan is to pull a quart of used oil, replace that with a quart of EC30, change the filter to a Fram Tough Guard 7317 and let it go for another thousand miles or perhaps a little more. Thanksgiving day is always a good opportunity for oil changes because the boss wants me out of the kitchen until it's time to mash the potatoes or carve the bird.

First thing I did when I got it home was clean the cooling vent. Purchased an aftermarket vent filter as well.

Not really worried about improving mileage, it gets great mileage currently. I think the Valvoline RnP is an extremely good oil for its price point (especially if even half of the testing on cleaning ring packs is true), so I'm sticking with it.

Based upon personally obtained data, including greatly extended OCIs, with accompanying UOAs, the price point with High Performance Lubricants is a better value, a stronger cleaning oil, as well as a substantially better protecting oil than Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Where is the long term substantiation for the relatively new V R&P, beyond "hey Valvoline said so " ???

My recommendation remains HPL PP 0W8, with one year OCI in your 2008 Prius .

Out.

Here's the latest filter swap: 1 month, 600 miles, Fram PH3600. Another Supertech filter when back in.

Thoughts: oil seems much darker now. Still quite a few "chunky" pieces in the filter media and in the bottom of the can body, but greatly reduced from first oil change. Orange can Fram doesn't really have THAT much more filter media than the Supertech OE style replacements. I'm stepping up to a Fram Endurance 3600 for the next OCI of ~3500 miles (that will start in a few weeks).

Note: I actually pulled this filter last Sunday, but didn't get around to posting the pics until today.

Oil consumption seems the same, or very slightly lower. Oil level was perfectly between the min and max lines right after the last filter change, and was right at the min level right before this filter change. I added just enough to get it right back in the middle of the range.

Pouring from a 5qt jug, it's really just a guessing game on how much I added to get the level up. I need to get myself some little graduated container for topups.

Thanks Two. I love seeing the cut open filters.

For those of you who are more into this than me, are these carbon pieces in the filter not something you see with traditional motor oils?

I don't usually see it with engines that that have good oil change history. I have seen it many times, usually in cases of neglect, but I haven't really tracked it.

Some five quart jugs at Walmart are a half-quart low (4-1/2qts).

Yes, the chunky bits don't point to the greatest maintenance history, but still, it doesn't smoke, clank, knock, or rattle... and it gets 43pmg+ in 100% around town driving.

Hopefully R&P cleans it up good enough to last until my daughter graduates college.
