Experimenting to see if R&P can dissolve the suspected varnish causing a noisy valve lifter in my Volvo. See this thread for more backstory: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...0w-30-short-604-mile-run-with-seafoam.394968/

Did a filter change and pulled a sample out of an abundance of caution at 2000 miles. Filter caught minor fine carbon grit but nothing too strange. A bit less than with the MMO at similar interval, but that may indicate there's less of that material left to remove. There were a couple tiny flecks of ferrous metal in there, but that may have been from the utility knife contacting the filter media end caps as I cut it out.

Oil report came back looking great as well. Very low wear metals, though it seems this engine has a penchant for shearing oil that I'll want to keep an eye on. I'm running stock boost and tune, and the oil did not see any temp excursions or sustained high RPM either. Hot oil pressure at both idle and cruise are very healthy so I'm not too worried at the moment. No noticeable change in oil pressure with new filter so that wasn't causing a measurable restriction.

Oil is darkening faster than it would with other oils, but not excessively so. Can see a faint soot ring of ultrafine suspended material, but the insolubles measurement is low so the bulk of the mass is either dissolved completely or large enough to get caught in the filter. I'll run this out to the factory interval of 5k or so, then go for round 2. Looks like I can get away without the mid interval filter change on subsequent intervals.

The carbon in the oil filter looks normal to me.
Would be interesting to compare after a 5k run to see how much more it loaded up.

There’s definitely a bunch of cleaning going on. The rest of the crud is suspended in the oil.

Nobody mentioning the drop in viscosity after 2k. .....fuel dilution ????????
No measurable fuel presence, as shown in the flashpoint test. Oil was also sampled hot after a decent run at oil temps high enough to force any fuel to boil off.

This engine seems like it likes to chew on the oil a bit though. Stock tune and boost of 6 psi, no high temp or high RPM operation. It also munched the previous oil, more than what could be explained by the Seafoam in use. Even the oldest historical sample there had a starting viscosity on the high end of spec so that sheared down as well.

Whatever is going on, I still have plenty of oil pressure and it's not causing unusual wear.

There will be another sample when I drain this oil at 4 or 5k, plus a filter cut open again since it's so quick to do. Next run I'll run the filter out the whole time since I'm confident it can hold enough material.

What your seeing on the gauge is all that matters if motor is quiet ...........good luck
Only noise is the existing minor lifter tick that I've been chasing. Nothing weird from the bottom end.

Hot oil pressure at 100C easily exceeds factory minimum spec for this engine and really hasn't changed much in 100k miles.
