Valvoline R&P 5W-30 | 5k mi OCI | 2020 Toyota Tundra

Why do you say that? Because of the moly and boron?

Even Valvoline says VRP is their best oil.

Well one is "best" and the other is "highest" so I guess you can take your pick! 🍺

They do make the distinction of "best performing high mileage" motor oil for the Extended Protection High Mileage though.
On the website there are many claims - even pictures of the cleaning of pistons - and this EP has Dexos and so on …
Doubt there are major differences - that costs money 🧐

Did you interpret this as though Valvoline was a better oil, or that Pennzoil was better because it cleaned deposits/sludge left behind by the Valvoline?
It was standard pennzoil 5w30 (Dino) so I would probably assume it wasn’t on par with valvoline synthetic. Plus it was a summer time run through the blue ridge mountains of NC. The manual stated that I could use non synthetic 5w30 and I had a 5qt jug I had got for a good deal. This was the only time this car ever saw anything that wasn’t 0-20 synthetic.

Both are great. I’ve been running EP / EP HM in the Mustang for a while but next OCI I am going to do a maintenance run of VRP.

If an oil remains clean (mostly "virgin") after several thousand miles I would have to question how well its doing at removing contaminants from the motor.
Even if I were using VR&P I may run a substitute oil like M1 0W30 ESP every 3rd OCI just to see if the M1 picks up anything additional (cleaning) with it’s different add pack .

If (like most BITOG members) you do <5K mile / 6 month OCI’s using a good synthetic oil - then perhaps all you will need is one or two maintenance runs of VR&P now and then for total clean up. If I don’t stay with VR&P full time - I’ll use it every 3rd OCI subbing with my regular M1 0W30 / 5W30 ESP oil.

Looks like a good oil that would serve me well in the winter. I rarely go over 4K from November till April and this is priced well enough I can dump it and not feel bad. Plus it may just do something. My summer sales tour starts Sunday. Ohio to Fairfax then back home and back to Missouri the week after. My company will pay mileage (72 cents) a mile for anything under an 8 hr drive. I’ve managed to never really have to make a car payment this way. I’m running good oil this summer since I’m going to bottom out the OLM.

Samples 2 and 4 pulled manganese from somewhere. Interesting.👍
What's this in reference to?

May? Pretty convincing evidence here I think it works quite well.

I Love the extended protection high mileage 5w30.......... not so much worried about cleaning and a little thicker

I don’t know that any of my cars need VRP to be honest. My oldest car, 18 rogue has 102k and basically saw nothing but maxlife synthetic that was changed between 4-5k religiously. I stuck a horoscope down as far as I could get it and it was absolutely pristine. My daily driver has 48k and a solid run of hpl ppcmo revealed next to no carbon in the filter. My wife’s has 11k on it and has had hpl for 10k of those miles. I doubt VRP would be a benefit. But I do like the idea of what it may prevent come winter time.
