I received an email from Valvoline recommending the below intervals. This is the first time I've seen this from Valvoline.

So the recommended oil change inerval for R&P is 5000 miles. I think that's what most of us have done actually but it's good to see a confirmation

The recommended oil change interval is 120 days??
That stuff must be garbage.
We should be using better oil.
/end snark

also who is the email from? valvoline or their valvoline instant oil change?

Valvoline Global

Not exactly a cost-effective OCI if heavy cleaning isn't required.

If you are using Valvoline Restore and Protect in a clean engine you can go by the OLM. If you do not have an OLM, then I guess you can get a UOA sample with TBN at 5000 miles and get an idea how long you can run the oil.

Have you filled any questionaires when you entered your info ? As for type of driving (city, heavy, etc) ?
Or a zip code ?

These intervals are pretty much in check with the recommended OCI for New York City driving for example. Heavy city traffic, short trips. Could be they have some basic algo getting geographical location in the equation.

No questionnaire I just have bought a lot of things directly from them in the past

I’m curious if this is their general rule of thumb for all vehicles or just the specific vehicle here?

I have asked them a couple of times to make a suggestion about the recommended interval for R&P in my Civic but they just give me the canned response saying to follow the vehicle manufacturer for the OCI.

I think lately some of us have have suspected that R&P might not really be good for much more than 5 or 6k. Perhaps whatever secret ingredient that they use may deplete itself by about 5k, so running it longer could mean that for anything beyond that mileage it is no longer cleaning as much (if at all) Thoughts on that?

I am wondering if the secret ingredient can Protect after 5 or 6K.

Sell more oil being conservative, especially that conservative.

Valvoline own a lot of those quick oil change businesses.

I have been running the R&P to the oil life limit ( 11,000 miles ) for two oil changes ( same oil consumption so far ).

This oil is unique. So Valvoline Global / Inc protects itself shortening the OCI, not knowing the condition of every single engine innards.

Some folks keep a nasty, messy engine and the 5k recommendation minimizes any potential engine damage.

Besides, there's only so much cleaning additives that can be put in that quart of oil, before it starts negatively affecting areas like wear protection.

I consider 5k OCI as a smart recommendation by Valvoline. If you keep a relatively clean engine, you can probably remain worry-free during your 3-4-5k OCI..

If you take Restore & Protect's FAQ as their official stance (and why not) you could go to the owner's manual OCI. So up to 10,000 miles under non-severe for some and as low as 3,000 under svere driving conditions for others. Some manuals are ok with 7,500 under severe conditions. If Restore & Protect meets the owner's manual's recommended certifications then why not use it as prescribed by the manual?
