It has a pretty stout add-pak, depending on grade. The 10W-40 is pretty nice

I rate it 10/10.

Excellent oil for the price. 30%-40% synthetic, info from Valvoline. Solid additive package. Good for high mileage vehicles.

Hey Branson what's the HTHS of the 10w40 Maxlife?

I agree with your assessment of the Maxlife. Its great stuff no doubt.

I rate Valvoline pretty good i used it in 3 of my last oil changes because Pennzoil High Mileage comes in leaky jugs with no inner seal and it seems that the pennzoil jugs do not always have the same amount of oil in all of them (My Son took pictures in wal mart showing different level of oil in the Pennzoil brand i will have them posted in a day or two.. Other jugs from other companies like Valvoline looked all to be the same amount of oil in them and also had the inner seal to help prevent leakage and tampering. Although i like Pennzoil oil i decided on the valvoline.

Well Merk I would think 3.5 would be nice. Because it would really be a rather light 40 obviously. Similar to 0w30 Castrol.

That's interesting because Castrol EDGE has 3.5 for HT/HS on their 0W-40, 5w30, and 5W-40.

Hey Merk.. keep in mind that those Castrol numbers were from their European Professional lineup. These are not the regular ILSAC GF-5 5w30s you and I get off the shelf here in the US... the HTHS of the Castrol 5w30 we get in our market is 2.9-3.1 most likely. Not the same sauce there Captain

Did you miss where multiple people pointed out that those numbers are the HT/HS minimum and not the actual values?

I think his point was who really cares.

It's BITOG, someone always cares.

Ahh hey man... what percentage chance that the HTHS rating of an ILSAC GF-5 5w30 US oil going to be 3.5-3.8??? You want to lose money on that bet?? You would lose easily. It's obvious to any casual person that those values were minimum values on the US version of Castrol. But it's not a difficult hypothesis to believe they aren't going to be much more than 2.9. How many ILSAC GF-5 oils have an HTHS of 3.4 or higher?? Yeah that's right. Zero is likely that answer. Go ahead and find them and list them..

If those were the same setup as the American ILSAC GF-5 in that those are minimum values then well that's fine. But it would fall into the same concepto... they aren't likely to be all that much higher than the "minimums" listed.

Just to add this.. you were exactly right about what you stated. It was the minimum numbers.

It is the EXACT same format of information put out by Castrol for their US ILSAC GF-5 oils.
I believe that the actual numbers are in fact hardly much more than the minimums. Would be hard to imagine a 5w30 Castrol European Professional oil having a HTHS of say 3.99. Is it impossible?? Certainly not. However, in the US market it would be hard to think any US Castrol ILSAC GF-5 oil has a significantly higher HTHS than the listed 2.9. When every other one I've ever seen was 3-3.1.

My main point with Merk was that these oils are likely rather hard to come by here in the US.

Again, you were exactly right about the format. So I apologize for my tone in my first post here. My bad.

I have used a fair bit of Valvoline DuraBlend 10W-40 Synblend, probably pretty much the same stuff but without the seal conditioners that MaxLife has.

I think it was a good oil that performed well. No used oil analysis done, just seat of the pants stuff.

Synblends or semi-synthetics seem to be the minimum required to meet Dexos or A3/B4 specs, so they tend to be good value oils that deliver good performance. My two favorite synblends would probably be Valvoline DuraBlend (or MaxLife) and Castrol Magnatec.

And that those are the European varieties, all lacking the ILSAC certification he desperately craves.
