Since we finally got some good weather in my area, I decided to change out my oil and oil filter. I was running MC 5000 10w30 with Super Tech ST7317 oil filter. That oil had 6100 highway miles on it so it wasn't that bad. My commute is around 90miles roundtrip/day.

I went to Wally World to purchase ML 5w30 because of the mileage on my car. Instead us using my typical ST7317 oil filter, I went to AAP and bought all of the AAP tough guard filters they had for my car (4). I immediately noticed a difference upon start up. With the MC 5000 and ST oil filter, I had the start up tick until it warms up. I didn't have that this morning. I wonder if it was the ST oil filter that caused the tick? I doubt if it could be the MC 5000 that caused it? What do you guys think? I already knew that ML was pretty good, but I'm very happy about the AAP tough guard filter too!

It's possible that you got a bum filter. Were you/are you able to cut open the oil filter and check it out further? I'm using a SuperTech on my car right now with no startup noise however, and I've used one before as well with no issues. But defects can happen with any company...

Yeah, you are right. I did notice that I never heard the ticking noise before using ST filters. On my last oc, that's when I started hearing the ticking noise in the morning. Could be that particular filter was a bad one. No I didn't cut it open. I don't have the tools for that. I'm quite happy with my AAP oil filter though. It was identical to the Premium Plus.

I will be running this same setup (maxlife/AATG) in a neglected 2000 4Runner with ~93,000 miles. I plan to do my first uoa after a 5k run.

I believe you are referring to the AAP Totalgrip. Fram makes the Tough Guard.

It has been posted on several internet sites, the Totalgrip is made by Purolator.

I've cut open several SuperTech oil filters and I love the way they are/were constructed but, I have had startup noise with every one of them on my wifes Lexus, my Altima and my daughters Accord(3 different applications). Needless to say I haven't used them in some time. I do have good succuss with the AAP Totalgrip. And when the AAP Totalgrip were on sale BOGOF, they're a great deal.

That's what I meant. Total Grip. I was thinking total grip and used tough guard. I already knew that the AAP filter was made my Purolator. I was just stating that it was identical inside to the Premium Plus.

Yeah, the ST filter is built quite well, but I did have start up noise. I don't have it with the AAP oil filter. Once I'm done using all of the AAP total grip, I will just start buying the Premium Plus oil filter.

Could be coincidence. I've had start-up ticking (intermittently - mainly in the winter) ever since I bought my car 15 years ago - it's had the tick with Amsoil, Bosch and ST filters. Comes and goes. (?)
