Getting ready to do an oil change on 2003 Mazda Protege with about 137,000 miles . Valve seal smoke for short time on start up. Currently has Pennzoil Ultra in it. Thinking of changing to an High Mileage oil. Quaker State or Valvoline? or does it matter? Which will work "better" for my application?

Either one may work in your engine, but you need to try one or the other for several OCI's to let it works.
NextGen Maxlife. Excellent stuff
Both are excellent, but I'd go with the MaxLife FAR rebate. In any case, are you using a lot of, or leaking any, oil or is it just smoke? With a syn like Ultra, you could just top-off and run it for an extended OCI. Ultra may also gradually taper off any usage or smoke after a few thousand miles...

A High Mileage oil will have little or no effect on valve seals. Different rubber compound than a gasket. That and the damage to a valve seal is usually a wear issue rather than a shrinkage issue. I've tried them all, like Mobil 1 High Mileage the best because its both a syn and a high mileage oil. Because its a syn, I can go thicker and not suffer from cold startup ticks.

I've had good experience with Maxlife in two cars, and you can't beat FAR.
As another poster noted above, it may require at least a couple of OCIs for you to see any improvement.
It may also be that, as was noted above, the smoke may taper off if you continue using Ultra.
If you want to try an High Mileage oil, though, Maxlife would be your best bet, for cost and availability.

Either one. Change it when you should per your owners manual for your driving conditions. Don't overthink it, and enjoy life!!
Both will probably lessen or get rid of the "puff" IMO, and both are fantastic oils.
The Castrol High Mileage mentioned above doesn't get much love around here but my first hand experiences with it in several vehicles has been very positive, a highly overlooked option.

I think Defy has yet to prove itself.
If you have a oil leak the best stuff is ATP 205 Stop Leak. You cant find it in stores but you can find it on Amazon and Im telling you this stuff will stop leaks in minutes. I have seen rear main leaks and the bottom of the car is just cacked with oil. Change the oil with any oil, syn or dino my blend or High Mileage oil and with the ATP 205, after the change we drove around and came back and put some cardboard under the vehicle and not a drop. Also we pressured washed the bottom of the vehicle and 4000 miles later the owner came back and it was dry as a bonce under the vehicle. Also ATP 205 is NOT a SNAKE OIL, its not even OIL, A special plasticizer which softens and expands rubber based hydraulic seals to stop leaks. you can pour it into a clear glass and it looks like water....
Personally I use Valveoline MaxLife Pure SYN each 7000 miles and put ATP 205 in 1 time a year, I also added some to my transmission. Also ATP 203 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid Friction Modifier it keeps the transmission cooler.

Motor oil saver by lubro-moly. Found at napa. It will stop the any leaks but I've seen the lubro-moly mos2 cure oil burn and smoking from worn engines. Try mos2 first. It will pay for itself in fuel savings alone,the curing of the "puff" will be bonus.
I have a 02 protege5 and my smoking is from the rings. After sitting over night, the cylinders would be dry prior to start up. And most protege owners suffer from the same thing. You might want to check the cylinder prior to start up to confirm it is your valve seals if you haven't already.

x2. I'm using High Mileage oil now, and like many others, did not see appreciable changes until the end of OCI #2.

I had a slight leak on my rear main seal. Decided to try Pennzoil High Mileage. Within 800 miles my leak is gone. Used to leave a drop after parking it in my garage. I put a new piece of cardboard under where I park it weeks ago and Im happy to say it still clean.
I don't know how much any High Mileage oil will help with valve seals though. Probably need to have those replaced.
