Valvoline High Mileage

Hey guys,

Another question, I just switched my wife's 00 L200 w/ the 2.2 eco-tec from Valvoline Dura-blend 5w30 to Valvoline High Mileage 5w30, mainly because my O'reily's no longer carries the dura-blend in 5w30 and Walmart carries the high milage in 5 quart jugs. Motor runs like new, doesn't use a drop between 4k OCI. Should I keep using the high milage or find a different source for the Dura-blend. I also use the oem filter.

IMO, dura-blend is overpriced for what you get.

Conventional Valvoline Maxlife is 12-18% PAO synthetic (a blend though not marketed as one) and is considered "thick" for a given viscosity (5-30, 10-30 etc).

I use the Syn version now, though both are great oils.

Why did you choose 5w30 over 10w30?

I like Maxlife better than Durablend. I run 10w30 year-round in Detroit. You certainly can run 10w30 year-round in Nashville, but the 5w30 won't hurt. Hey, you could even mix some straight 30 in with the 10w30 in your climate. Yes Maxlife comes in SAE 30.

You run 10w30 YEAR-ROUND??? What about the sub-freezing weather? What about the ice cold start-ups? What about the 10w30 not flowing quick enough? I've been agonizing back and forth in my brain trying make a decision between 5w30 and 10w30, and you're just now mentioning this?

Yep, rarely gets below zero F around here (does if you goe 10 or 15 miles west or north).

Wife's Aerostar parks in garage so it is even warmer. Motorhome sits in yard with 10w30 and
gets one or two winter cold starts (December and February).

I cheat with my F150 with an oil pan heater. Have 10w30 Citgo Ultralife in it now but still gets cold started coming home from work.

I'm a former DuraBlend user who switched to MaxLife several years ago. If you think ML is working well in your Saturn, I say stick with it. Its hard to pass up those red jugs @ W/M for less than $12.

Maxlife has that shot of PAO, which Durablend does not have (all per MSDS info). Also Maxlife is free of the constraints of starburst and "Energy Conserving." I suspect the base oil is a tad thicker.

According to that link, the rebate is only for $7. That comes out to $1.40 per qt, and I seriously doubt ML is that cheap. Not even the All Climate is that cheap, so how is that free oil? Or is my math just that far out of whack..

Where are you seeing $7? Click on the oil bottle picture and then "rebate details"...
