Has anyone ever cut one of these things open? I can't change my own oil (no supplies, etc.) so I end up going to Valvoline to just get it swapped out every 3k. I was wondering how good their filters are as I know they're made by Champ Labs, who make some well known, high quality filters. Any opinions? Thanks!

Is valvoline the name of the lube place or actually printed on the filter? If you know it's a champion labs filter (could be printed CHAMP etc) it's 99% likely to be constructed like the value-line supertech, valucraft, etc. Depending on your vehicle (model please) they might have recently started switching your filter over to the controversial E-Core. Plenty of pro and nay is available searching this site. You can go to walmart or autozone and examine a champ labs made filter in your hand without buying it-- or drop the $2 and bring it home to cut open.

I haven't been able to take a good look at one, but according to both the shop, Valvoline, and Champ, they are all (at least for the oil change places) made by Champ. I drive a 2004 Honda Civic EX (D17A2 Engine). I'm just looking for something that will filter good for my short OIC's (and better than the cardboard Honda). I drive so much oil usually only ends up in my engine for a month and a half, and even then I'd estimate that my highway driving is >80% versus city stop and go.

Yeah, I was thinking of buying a premium filter and just asking them to use that one instead of theirs. I'd asume they use halfway decent stuff given that it's coming from Champ Labs, but I want to make sure my engine lasts a long time given how much I drive.

Last time I had Valvoline do an oil change, it was indeed a Champion filter wearing valvoline markings. UOA showed it filtered just fine...

What part of the UOA indicated the oil filter was doing a good job?

Take a look at the Paradise Garage Study results for Mobil 1. They changed the oil filter at 12,000 miles because the insoluables were reaching the predetermined limit. After the filter change there was no difference in insoluables. The new filter made no difference.

It's not the Valvoline filter you should be worrying about when you go to a quick lube or even a dealer.

Check the dipstick to make sure they haven't overfilled the engine with oil. One might be surprised when they check their dipsticks..

Just type in overfilling engine oil in your search engine and see how many complaints you'll see.

Yeah, the first time I went there with my new car the arse put in too much. Not enough to cause any damage (like .3qt), but nevertheless I made sure they changed it for free and sat there and checked it my self before I left. I've been going to a different shop lately in a more well-to-do area and they've been dead on the Full line every single time.

Yes, Insolubles. I beleive it was the lowest I've ever had on this particular vehicle - around 0.3 IIRC.

You need to do a full particle count to see how clean the filter is keeping the oil.

Yes, filter guy hit it on the head. The Valvoline oil change places are famous for overtightened filters and plugs and overfilling crankcases. I'm not sure if it's a company policy problem or a local one, but it's not isolated.
