I found 12 quart bottles of this oil in a farm store ( tractor supply company ) priced at 4.17 per quart is this good oil or just pass on it? its covered in thick dust and the bottles are starting to yellow it has a date code below the bar code saying 1998.

Ask the store manager if they'll come down to a more realistic buck or so a quart for this old and long out of spec oil.
It would be fine for your truck, or anything built up through the late 'nineties, but it's no more than brand new old oil.

already tried asking if there was a discount from buying large quantity's and there is not the new SN valvoline is priced the same and i noticed some SL on the shelves it was 10w40
I would do them a favor and dump it in the drain oil tank. I just picked up a case of Valvoline conventional for $2.79/quart. Why any store would keep inventory sitting around that long is beyond me. They should have put it on clearance for $1/quart 10 years ago.

Actually, a store like Tractor Supply probably does stock them. Lots of farmers are still running old tractors that use them. I'm pretty sure Fleet Farm stocks them around here.

Sounds like every Sears I go to,they have shelves full of nearly 20 year old Syntec 5W50 and wanting $10 a quart for it!

oints for a late 60's chevy car like a nova or pickup with a 6 cyl work in a older HD with points. I'd offer $10 for the case. Carquest had some Valvoline 20w20 on the shelf for ever. I bought it as I was tired of looking at it. They closed the doors a week later.

That is asinine. I look for those early SJ oils in my travels for my GTO and occasionally find them but I would never pay that for an old, out of date, yellowing bottle. I found some Havoline 10w30 of ~1996 vintage and the shop was happy to sell it to me for $.99, that is the kind of pricing you should expect on that sort of old stock oil. Negotiate a sensible price or pass.

i already passed on it and yes the carry everything from breaker points to mineral blocks
