Valvoline 5w-30 Conventional...

New to the forum and new to the current car I just purchased and was wondering how long I can go with the oil I used last time?

Current car is: 2003 Mazda Protege DX 2.0L 4 Cylinder Automatic Transmission.

Driving conditions, winter, snow, some warm days, 80 city 20 highway, I AM A PIZZA BOY so a lot of idling/stop and go and start ups if that means anything.

Last oil change I used Valvoline Conventional oil from walmart that costed me 15 bucks and a purolator white oil filter.

I am currently at 3600 miles on current oil with 46,600 miles total on the car and was wondering if I should change it or do I keep going?

I googled this and got about 1 million different views..

I would consider that severe driving conditions and would look in your manual for the recommended oci for it. It will probably tell you to change it right around your current mileage. If you were using a quality synthetic I would go farther with it.

I would use synthetic oil(Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline Synpower, Castrol Syntec ...) with good oil filter(Wix, Napa Gold, Fram Tough Guard ...) and go 7-8k miles between oil changes.

Valvoline is a good conventional oil. With your driving style I woukd think it might go 5k. When you change your oil tomorrow take a sample to get analyzed, then you will know how it is doing at 3600 miles.

Where can I send my oil to get it reviewed?

3600 miles? Yeah, drain it out. No sense in taking a chance on getting varnish.

Order here and pick it up at your local NAPA store.

Put the sample in the sample bottle and fill out the short form. Takes 2 weeks for the results. Post the results here in the used oil analysis subforum to get additional insights. A very wise thing to do if you're wondering how far you can go on this oil and plan to use it consistently.

It's not totally free though - just so he knows. The kit may be free, but Black stone will charge you $25 plus another $5 for the TBN (an important number regarding an oils life left). Wix/Napa is simply $15 out the door up front. With TBN.

Yes after a reread i did sound like that...did not intend to be misleading.

Thanks for the info on the NAPA, I did not know that was the done deal price!
