I have a Pontiac 2003 Grand Am 2.2 EchoTech w 150,000 miles. I have owned it since new. I have always used Mobil 5w30 synthetic oil changed at around 7500 miles. I would like to take a look under the valve cover just to look for sludge or varnish and am wondering how hard/involved of a job it is to remove the valve cover?

Post a pic or two. That will give us an idea how many hoses/cables need to be removed.
Dont bother. Jeesh! Meaningless info. Pull the pistons and check for something important like varnished, blued and stuck rings instead.

If you don't feel it's meaningless, it shouldn't be that bad of a job, if you've done other work on cars. Would be a good idea to check on some platform or engine specific forums for tips or pointers. Probably want a new gasket and a torque wrench and a service manual is always a good idea.
Looking at my Ecotec, I wouldn't have any hesitation about pulling it off but I don't know your comfort level with cars.
