This is what I know about FRAM Extra Guard:

1.) In certain cases, the FRAM Orange Can has caused catastrophic issues with oil pressure. It probably won't be a problem in your application but....

2.) FRAM chooses to ignore internet postings of things like that. Apparently, if we are not Auto Store purchasers or execs, we don't matter.

3.) Quality Control seems to be lacking. If you see some of the videos of reviewers who have cut up the orange cans, there are a few with holes in the media.

4.) The Purolator Classic costs less.

5.) The Super Tech made by Champion Labs (the maker of the Mobil 1 filter) is way cheaper but much more solid of a product.

Don't get me wrong though, I like the rest of FRAM's products. I've always given the thumbs up to users of the Tough Guard filter or the Extra Guard cartridge filters. I just wish they could bring even a little of that quality to their Extra Guard. But of course it's not like they care what us internet forum people think.

How did the cam look? The 5th lobe from the left looks like it's showing some wear but it might be just a reflection.

I'm very curious to what it will look like next oil change so I might pop it open again.. stay tuned! And I guess fram extra guard is only good for some applications.

I ran Fram filters for years with not one single failure ever. I did change filters when I found out via the grape vine before the internet even that the Purolator was a much better deal, and at the same price or better.. I forget price of each now. The Honda loos normal to me, I have seen cars with huge amount of miles on no telling what oil with valve cover looking exactly like yours pictures. I don't see any sludge in any of the pics, I see varnish which Honda's just have for some reason with lots of miles...maybe conventional causes this varnish, but the varnish is just an eye sore at the most. The inside of your engine is clean as far as any mechanical engine goes, I'm not sure how much good the cleaner done.

A synthetic oil may have kept the engine somewhat cleaner, however for any practical purpose the conventional oil it has been run on has served the engine very well, and any varnish that is present from the pictures has not, and will not harm anything. I'm not sure the synthetic oils will give any longer life of an engine, and any cleanliness it might add to the engine will not prolong life either...my opinion based on many many miles of both conventional, and synthetic.

Looks just like my '95 Integra which also had 5k/6mo. OCI's with conventional for the first 12 years of its life. I took a pic of the valvetrain when I bought it 3 years ago and it looked just like yours (aside from the obvious mechanical differences)

right, because if you used anything cheaper than a Fram Extra Guard (like say a Super Tech from Walmart), the car wouldn't have lasted 146k miles

Its just people make it seem fram is a horrible filter and will most indefinitley cause damage. I personally don't even like fram, I do wish mobil had that grippy stuff on there can.


It's because it is [censored], has a bad ADBV that causes startup knock and has half the filter medium while having the same price as other filters on the market.

Why buy shiet for the same price when there are better options.
