What kind of vacuum can handle this? The ones with a rotating beater bar just become clogged up/tangled with hair and the ones without a beater bar are typically not strong enough to pull the hair at all.

If your vacuum has enough suction, I'd use an attachment. I spent 15 minutes a while back removing short and medium length hairs from the seat and seat back of my elderly mom's tight mesh fabric chair. The only thing that worked well was an attachment with a roller and brush like ones designed to lift and suck up pet hairs. Most vacuums now come with some version of that device and they're easier to deal with in clearing / cleaning. An attachment like that or similar might work better.

Doing some more research, apparently these carpet rakes dont handle long human hair well.

please contact/PM @ SteveSRT8, he is our resident carpet cleaner expert.

I remember you have a kid, would it make sense for you to replace the carpet? (if smelly, or TOO MUCH HAIR)

QP,

Keep a utility knife handy and carefully cut the hair off the brush roll before it becomes a bigger problem. Some people use scissors instead of a utility knife.

If you use shorter cleaning intervals eventually you will rid the carpet of massive amounts of hair.

Yeah, that is basically what I've been doing, but it's still a PITA. I actually have to remove the brush roll from the vacuum to get at it better. Hence I started this thread in search of a better solution.

Uhm, this one person at home sheds hair faster than I can vacuum it. At this rate, it won't be long before she's bald, so I guess the problem will eventually solve itself.

You might try a Sanitaire with a stainless brush roll. The hair does not stick to the brush roll like it does a wood or plastic roll. Plus you can remove the floor plate in a couple of seconds to get quick access. The 7 amp motors provide way more suction and airflow than any big box store vacuum. Long hair can defeat any brush roll so go for one you can cleanup quick. If the one running the vacuum has allergies, go for a clean air vac with an easily removeable floor plate. CleanMax comes to mind.
